any1 know how to apply a phosphate finish?

stainless or carbon steel?

purpose of coating?

Does it gotta be phosphate finish or would another inorganic finish be acceptable

carbon steel 1095, if you know something better that doesnt require baking of the knife(ie epoxy)

These guys make a black oxide coating kit. They make one for carbon steels and another for stainless. They say it produces a corrosion resistant finish. It should be more durable than any paint system. I have to say that I have not tried it. I ran across it at work when I was looking for other information. But it looks like it will do the job and the setup is suitable for DIY.

ty feng! bill while nickel is an excellent protectant(except from sulfur, especially sulfuric acid fumes) it is unfortunately lusterous and defeats the second purpose of a black protectant coat, but thanks for the suggestion!
