Anybody else here into performance autos?

Now I'm jonesin for a '98-'03 BMW M5...:foot:

Here are some great used ones on ebay....

I recently sold a beloved '69 Mercury Marauder x-100. A buddy and I have 6 AMXs on blocks while we try to find brake parts for them. Probably the best pedigreed car I had was an old Alfa guiletta veloce spyder. Sure was a fun car. I still lust after a Lotus 7. One of these days, though I'm pretty old and stiff for a car like that.

right now I've got a for van. ported and polished it myself, bored and stroked it, had it blueprinted and balanced after we dropped a camshaft from a police car's engine into it. Re-geared the transmission, so it now gets about 12mpg (I don't use it much any more). It will do about 120. It was a school bus before I got it.... I am proud to drive a short bus:) Still has the lights on top.

My every day is a 95 cadillac SLS. One of these days I plan to shoehorn the Northstar into a pontiac Fiero GT. That will be a fun car:) The SLS averages 20 mpg.

Here is my baby:

How much performance? I've got a 396 (obviously stroked) Lt-1 converted to an LT-4 top end with plenty of TPIS goodies sitting in a 94 C4:D. Waiting til the end of the year and hopefully a new ATI blower will be coming from Santa since the motor was built low-compression for a blower.:)

Dan,

You can save cash and get a BMW 540i w/the Sport package and 6-speed and basically have a M5 without the M5 price tag; I just priced a couple here in Atlanta; 2000 and 2001 models and both were under $17,000. It is the next "family car" that I was wanting to get.

"Family car" qualifications in this case means it just has to have four doors! :D

396vette - I like the way you think, bro!!

:D

Tom's trying to talk me into one of these:

I did manage to find a rather sweet one on ebay...:D

For me, the car has to have the following:

1 - Go fast :D
2 - 4 doors (see justification above :p)
3 - slight "sleeper" look to it (vs over-the-top/obvious = viper, porsche)
4 - reliable - it will be a daily driver

Other than that...I'm not too picky. :D

And, while I'm busy running my mouth....the reason I keep looking back at ebay is because I have actually purchased 2 cars and a motorcycle off ebay...and all 3 transactions went great. Of course, I'm a careful shopper...but I actually like going through ebay because I can talk to the person in advance...over the course of a few days...negotiate...or settle things out...plus their reputation is on the line....compared to an ad in the classifieds....no accountability there at all. So, in that respect, for me anyway....ebay is actually as good or even better than "in person".

My wife, of course, thinks I'm nuts. :D

Hey...I don't disagree with that...as long as she understands. :p

I'mGatMan!! - tell me more about your car!

Anybody that sees the "M" badge will be tipped off, of course I suppose you can remove it to get back the sleeper image! A true sleeper if it wasn't badged would be a Dodge 300 SRT-8, if you aren't averse to owning or driving a Dodge that is. Parts if needed would probably be less expensive, though I am not sure!

I still have my first car... It needs work but I hope to get back to it. '67 Mustang with a 351C in it. It was pretty fast when on the road.

Now I have a 2000 F250 Powerstroke Diesel(don't drive it much) I have a few minor mods added to it. Dynoed stock 200hp 450ish TQ after 306hp 608tq... just with a few minor mods :D

I would LOVE a BMW M5 My dream sporty luxury car has always been a 740IL Man they are sweet!

396vette - I actually love the Chrysler 300....a lot!...and the SRT8 version more! But the missus is convinced it is an old-man car.....and the sporty/tricked out ones are "too gangsta" for her.

On a related note....I played leap-frog with one of these across Oklahoma (I-40) the other day...

Absolutely amazing. Driver was teasing me.....bad!

Stump_25 - love the 67 Mustang....but if I'm goin to get one...gonna mortgage the house and get Eleanor...:D

But again...I don't like driving an "obvious" sports car...so, Eleanor eludes me. :p

Maybe I should get the 300...if it does look like an old-man car....that would be "sleeper" enough for me. :D

Should be plenty of perf stuff for the Hemi 8.

And yes, I would take the "M" badge off an M5. ;)

Back in the day I used to have a car, a little 1966 Chevy II 100, a slight sleeper with a built 283 (bored to 305), 3/4 race marine GM cam, Carter AVS "Daytona" carb sitting on a C4B Edelbrock manifold, scooped rear draft hood (so's no one would notice), dual rear suspension (coils and leafs - to maintain contact), Chevy truck transmission - 3 spd, Corvette manifold dumping into 3" dual pipes and blow-thru muffler, electric fuel pump (got to get the gas to this beast), 3.18 to one rear end. The seat was raked back and you better believe it had seatbelts. Weight was significantly under 3000 lbs and it would cruise at about 5800 - 6000 rpm (in the 140s) in high gear. Being a unitized body it handled well with no oversteer.

I still have a scar on my knuckle when I broke a mounting bolt shifting to second. It usually ran in the mid to high 11s on the quarter mile (when I could maintain traction). I would drive it to the track to race (in NHRA C Modified production or A Supersport) and sometimes sleep in it. The last time I raced it was at Yellow River the week before Richard Petty lost control and went into the crowd at the track. I lost by one length to a full house Dodge GTO (not a Pontiac) called the "GOAT." I drove it every day until I sold it in 74 with 154,000 miles (and two engines on it). It would eat 396 Camaros for breakfast. It t'werent a knife; but, it'd sure cut air.

wow...heckuva car!!!

Whenever I think of Chevy IIs...I see wheelies...

:D

I have to admit that I'm loving the new Shelby's. The factory is here in Vegas and when you drive by the speedway on the way out of town, you just about always see a bunch of em.

That new Challenger (?) is awesome though!

Indeed!

I am also digging the new Charger SRT8....would love one in all black...but they scream "Hey, I'm a cop!"

You want a real sleeper, get the Audi Avant with the Lambo Gallardo engine. You can even order it with the finishes from the normal line. Until you turn on the engine you would be hard pressed to notice the difference.

Its marketed at people that want a a race car but hate to show it off to their neighbours or clients. Specially clients that might react annoyed if a vendor comes in with a Lambo, an Audi on the other hand is accepted. But it is expensive, here it retails at 1,7 Mio Rand which is about 250 Thousand US$. But then you get a real race car for your money and you can claim understatement of the year.
