Anybody else looking forward to freeze- up?

Yes.

Not because of hot ice sailing ... as joyous as I know it would be ... but

... perhaps it is because, during the short growing season here, there is always the sense of time urgency in summer ... to grow, to weed, to deter pests, to harvest, to improve, to landscape, patch the roof, to do the ditching that requires un-frozen soil, to do the tasks that require fine motor skills in the open air ... like working barehanded with tools.

...perhaps it is because the draw to canoe, kayak, camp, hike, swim, set the evening campfires for pleasure ... and many of the responsibilities of life and property all coincide during the warm months.

... perhaps it is because the winter sky is crystal blue, the air is youth-giving fresh, there is a welcoming and sheltering cocoon in the warmth indoors, there are books to read and life-easing 'mending' that wants for organization and time. Restore. Respite.

... perhaps it is because, on the way to spring, the snowshoes will offer a walk over top the white landscape, the clear thought of a changing life, an escape from the indoors ... and, heck, a path to spring. Spring is hope.

I honestly look forward to all four seasons here, every year. It is more than just a change.

The pups don't track sand indoors in winter, or pick up fleas.

So that's where those little cubes come from that I put in my drinks. Who'd have ever thunk!! Kevin in Tucson

LOL... I live in central Oklahoma, and people start freaking out here when we have a little freeze. I grew up in the the mountains of Colorado for the most part, and I DO look forward to winter. Around here though, when the weathermen start talking about a 'Major' freeze people run to the grocery store and clear out the shelves! Then we get a one day freeze or 2 inches of snow. I just can't figure people out.

Its here! My thermometer says 12. It was -30 yesterday. We had a late freeze up but when it came it hit hard. I am never ready. I still do not have all my firewood cut. There is a lot to do here in the winter. The kids are snow boarding. I hope to get out ice fishing soon. MY favorite time of year is March and April when the days are getting longer. You can go any where on a snow machine. I never seem to get to all of the activities that I enjoy.

A snow machine here makes flavored snowcones. I don't like walking on frozen water cause eventually you will fall through. It it spring yet? Will be 22 here tomorrow night. Someone's pool pump will die and pipes will burst. And they will decide to winterize, too little too late, but it means me reaching arm deep in water so cold that I lose feeling in my fingers when inserting plugs after blowing all the lines. Ah... spring.

I just like the cold, straight up.

This winter I plan to do a 2 day hike with my GF, hope we dont make it on the evening news.

Iceboating season is usually short lived, but for the time I get out and go 50++ with just the wind, it's all worth it.
After sailing gets snowed out there are all the other snowy fun to be had. Don't get winters like we did when I was a kid so don't winter camp as much as I would like. Teens at night is a bit warm.:D

LOL reminds me of the winter 3 or 4 years ago. One of the guys that works for me was on vacation and said that his apartment manager had left a message on his phone and he wanted me to check it out. The wife and I went over to his building and met with the managers, who took us to his apartment. He lived in an interesting building. The middle of each building were 2 story, with fancy single floor apartments on the ends. He was in an end unit, and had decided to save electricity by turning the heat all the way OFF!! The apartment had a sunken living room, and when the pipe burst in the wall of the dining room it sprayed directly into the living room...... which filled with water and then froze! The sunken fireplace filled with almost a foot of water, and when the water froze, the expansion broke the fireplace walls. Everything on in the living room below the 14" level was ruined, including his furniture and most of his electronics. There was like $30K damage to the apartment, not even considering his personal property.

Yup; just spent 5 hours outside today. It was about 15 degrees out. :D

Never tried ice sailing though, looks like fun.

Greg, next weekend there is a large group sailing in Ashby. Someone there would more than likely get you in a boat for a try.

I hung a deer on my gambrel last night intending to process it this morning. After a night of 19 degrees, I don't think that will happen soon. I do have an electric chainsaw but...

Thanks for the info and the link. I have too many family shenanigans this weekend with the holiday, but I think I'll prowl that forum a bit.
