Although I posted this ( http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=805979 ) in the general forum, upon further reflection, I probably should have put it here, as it didn't get any play there.

I'd like to know if you all have any suggestions for pimping the scales on my Cold Steel Black Rhino, as it's too slippery for me.

Thanks,

sorta, I once took a cast off a rhino's leg (he broke his P3 on the right rear leg)... oh you mean the knife, I see what you did there! ;)

I didn't do anything to it, yet! :D

Trying to figure out if I really want to, and probably need some encouragement or something like that. Those scales are dovetailed into the knife, and not all that easily reproduced. Plus they're not all that thick, not a lot to work with.

My first thought would be a rat-tail file and a jig or file guide, and cut shallow slots in the scales. That would improve the grip, and you can work down any rough edges with emery cloth. Other than that, you may have to make (or have made by someone here) some new scales with a different texture.

bead blast the whole thing, scales and bolsters. it will look good but not shiny anymore and sand blasted micarta is a bit grippier than when polished and buffed. maybe not enough grippy for you ... worth a try.

i use quite often a boning knife in sandblasted micarta and it's grippy enough for me, even when covered in blood and fat ...

Never took a knife with a TriAd lock apart before. The pin that serves as the fulcrum for the lock looks like it needs simply to be driven out of the frame. Is that right? Anything special I should know before embarking on this?
