KNIFE, #15 T/C NESSMUK BY BUCK
No. A49203
( View More Items for "Folding Knives" )
T/C No. 15 "NESSMUK" KNIFE BY BUCK George Washington Sears (penname "Nessmuk"), at the age of 5 9, weighing 105 pounds and weak from pulmonary tuberculosis, canoed the Fulton chain of lakes in the Adirondacks in 1880 . When he went into the Adirondacks, his entire load, inclu ding his canoe and two days provisions, never weighed more t han 26 pounds. He favored a "trinity" system of cutting too ls; a custom-built double hatchet, a substantial moose pattern folding knife, and a light, fixed, thin blade knife "hand y for skinning, cutting meat, or eating with." This limited edition "Nessmuk" knife is made exclusively for Thompson/Cen ter by Buck's Custom Shop. Limited to 150 knives, the No. 1 5 knife features a 4 3/4" flat grind blade with the distinct "Nessmuk" profile. Grips are made of North American Elk ho rn with a lanyard hole for a thong. Each knife will be marke d "T/C No. 15 'Nessmuk'" and serialized 001 through 150. A leather style sheath is included.

Almost exactly 100 years later, I canoed the Fulton chain twice (different years). Unfortunately, my load was significantly more than 26 lbs.

BTW, the Fulton chain is a great canoe route.

I wasn't aware of this knife (the Buck Custom Shop version). Thanks for bringing it up.

Does anybody else find it hard to believe that his entire load, including canoe, was 26 pounds? I'm not a Nessmuk expert, but what kind of canoe in the 19th century weighed so little? It must have been tiny.

Yes, the Fulton chain is a nice canoe route.

Hmmm, maybe I should look at getting the Nessmuk setup. I can get the Queen moose (or special Muskrat, as they call it), I see a lot of nice Nessuk knives on KF (where there is a lot of Nessmuk talk). And I need to get a high quality hatchet, too.

Wow! Thanks for bringing this up in the thread. I've got some more 'net searching to do regarding this trip.

10.5', 14 lbs?? My bloody sea kayak is 7 feet longer and 60 lbs heavier. Even my small whitewater kayak weighs twenty lbs more! That thing is truly featherweight!!

Somebody in the Buck Forum will have pictures.

150 of these were made by the Buck Custom Shop for TC Arms. Maybe Buck will bring out a production version...

Very sweet, were can I get one? What type of steel are they, and how much money?
