I need some brass eyelets for my sheath making that will go through 1/4 - 5/16 inch thich leather. The kind of eyelets that are round on both side. Diameter should be 5 - 5 1/2 mm ca 3/16 inch. I have a really good hand press for setting eyelets but all the ones I find are too short!

Kevin,

Try www.fastener-supply.com they sell graduated series eyelets (a given diamiter and several lenghts so you dont need differnt setters for each eyelet). These are Stimpson eyelets, you can try dealing with Stipmson directly but they are not easy to deal with and have a huge mininum order requirement. We have Stimpson doing some custom eyelets for us so trust me and try Fastener Supply Company first.

Thank you Nabok!

That looks like just what I was looking for. I bought a really nice machine made by Hang in Germany at the flea market for DM 210 - new price is over DM 1000. Hang doesn't make eyelets that are long enough for the leather sheaths. Looks like the fasteneer folks are just the ticket. Much obliged.

Got the catalog from Fastener supply yesterday after requesting it from their website. That was Fast!

They have just about everything you could ask for when it comes to fasteners for leather or clothing. Really great. Anybody who does sheath making should check this out.

Kindly remember, gentle posters, that a metal detector (whether wand or a loop you walk through) works on the principle of eddy current generation. That is to say, if you move certain conductive substances in a magnetic field, an eddy current (electricity) will be generated, and that current, as all electric currents, has a magnetic field.

Remember your old car generator worked by rotating a copper armature in a permanent magnetic field. Remember further that brass is a compound of Cu and Zn. So, your brass rivets may set off the metal detector just as do steel ones. Check it out with a wand or walk thru detector first to make sure.
