I just now saw this material for sale by an ebay vendor, who is selling it as material for knife scales.

Does anybody have a knife with this stuff on it? How do you like it?

Post pictures, if you have them. I have never seen it on a knife.

It would make a poor material for scales from what I've heard. Laminated Kevlar fuzzes up when you try to grind it.

Yes, but it comes in several varieties intended for different purposes. Laminating Kevlar is used in high-end canoes, for instance.

There are also motorcycle jeans that have a terry-loop Kevlar cloth sewn into the knees and butt.

Aaaaand, kevlar is often used in fire-retardant clothing & materials.
Also, people who perform with fire (dancers, object manipulators) use kevlar to make their tools. My wife does this type of performance, and I manufacture most of her implements, so I've used kevlar webbing, cloth, rope, and thread many times.

Haven't handled any laminated Carbon/Kevlar material yet, though.

I have a Custom Damascus Short Blade with Carb&Kevlar grip.
I love it.
Really good grip.

Got any pics? I'd be interested in seeing how the maker pulled it off! :)

I have 2 sets of pistol grips made by Carbon Creations, with carbon-kevlar material, but these are completely encapsulated inside clear resin. These are vacuum-formed and the edges are sealed which makes them look very clean, they don't have rough edges like the ones sold on ebay. If you buy the ones on ebay, how do you plan to seal the edges?

all plastics have a volatile component that eventually gasses out and leaves the remainder weak and brittle.

Wait--what? I think I'm missing the point of your post, Hank.:o

Kevlar degrades from abrasion, high heat and exposure to UV and oxygen. If properly sealed, it should last a very long time. Then again, the kevlar in knife handles should only be for cosmetic and not protective purposes anyway.

Exactly this. UV in particular is the killer for Kevlar. Don't think I've ever heard of a situation where outgassing was a recorded issue compared to the others.

You can seal the ends with another coat of epoxy then sand that to a smooth finish. But it doesn't always come out looking very clean.

Yeah. Seems kind of complicated. I think I'll stick with other materials
