Specifically, the Firelight (80 mph lighter & flashlight) or the Lamplight (flashlight/lantern combo)? They look like they would make nice presents for my kids to keep in their cars. Anybody familiar?

I don't have either of them but I've gotten a lot of other Brunton products and never had a problem with them. I don't know how powerful a light those two offer. They are neat little toys, though, especially the light/lighter!

Your kids might be better off with something like the Inova X5T with lithium batteries that can sit a long time until they're needed and the 5 LEDs give a good area light for about 20 hours, I think they're rated.

As a geologist, I have been using Brunton pocket transits for many years. They are quality products, but are quite expensive-over $200.00 apiece. They are durable and are readily repairable when you break the mirror or cover glass. I have only had to replace them through loss.

Their cheaper compass line is similar to Silva. They make fairly good binoculars.

I have no experience with their other products.

I've been carrying the firelight for a few months now... works pretty well... like a portable propane torch.. sounds like one too!

The light is handy but I wouldn't use it too much... I don't think the battery will last very long.

The only problem I've noted is the button that holds the spring loaded top closed is too easy to trip... I can count the number of times I've pulled it out of my pocket with the top open. Hasn't seemed to hurt it yet.. I'm just afraid of twisting it wrong in my pocket and ripping the top off. I try to keep it in a pocket without other gear so it stays safer.

Anyway, I'd recommend one... the button is only a small thing.
