anybody here attempt the Alcatraz swim?

Shouldn't you be more worried about escaping first?:p

The water is almost ice-cold and the current is very strong and takes you straight out to sea.
Other than that.....Good Luck!!

It's perfectly safe to swim the bay from Alcatraz to the mainland. There no sharks to worry about. Be sure to wear a black wet suit so that you will look like a seal. ;)

There actually aren't any sharks to worry about in the bay.

"..One of the many myths about Alcatraz is that it was impossible to survive a swim from the island to the mainland because of sharks. In fact, there are no "man-eating" sharks in San Francisco Bay, only small bottom-feeding sharks. The main obstacles were the cold temperature (averaging 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit), the strong currents, and the distance to shore (at least 1-1/4 miles)...."

I think I would want to swim with fins, which would probably disqualify me..

Now, where this lady swims, totally different story as far as animal life:

Yes, did it once years ago and that was enough... glad to be out of that place.

Oh wait.... No, never done it. Forget what I said.

I assume I can charter a boat to swim it myself? It's quite a fascinating area to me, especially since I have seen it in person recently. :)

If the gubmint says so, it must be true.

Do most people who attempt it make it?

I saw Alcatraz from the stern of a Korea-bound troopship. Offered a choice, I might have chosen the swim. I particulary rembered the choppy, fast current ..[/I] Scary
