Years ago my wife and I were victims of burglary in our home while we were working at our jobs. All of my rifles were stolen except for my dear rifle. It has taken a few years to replace what I lost but I will soon have the last missing one. A 50 cal. musket. I should have it well before deer season starts so this year will be something different. Does anyone else here use them?

I am glad to see there are muzzle loaders here. My original musket that was stolen was a TC Hawken 50 cal. The one I have on the way is a Cabela's brand 50 cal. Just in time for deer season. I will also see how it does on hogs. Here is an interesting note I was told by the guy that sold me the musket. He said some hog hunters like melt down tire weights for their bullits because the lead is more dense and they get better penatration on the thick hog hide.

I have skinned a few wild hogs that had muzzleloader lead round balls in their shoulder area. Big wild boars have a thick "plate" in their shoulder area which is hard to penetrate with muzzleloader bullets and some broadheads.
I hunt with a T/C Omega muzzleloader and use Hornady SST 300gr. bullets, using two 50gr. Triple 7 Magnum pellets.
Gadsden, if you're concerned about penetration while shooting your musket, I suggest you shoot the hog as he is quartering away from you, so you miss the "plate." Aim for the opposite side shoulder, or else - low, right behind the front leg in the heart area.
Study a hog's anatomy and see how low the heart is compared to a deer.
You might want to shoot a heavy bullet for good penetration, see if your rifle likes to shoot them accurately. Good luck and happy hunting!
