I was just wondering if there are any season knife makers near the Central (Harrisburg), PA area that might need some help around the shop or would be interested in taking on an assistant?
By near I mean within an hours drive.

There's quite a few of them. I'm not sure how many would be able to take on an assistant, even an unpaid assistant. I would check out local gun and knife shows and check with them there. Better face to face.

i have not the time to ahve a helper but i can sure help with some answers

what are you looking to do ?

ABS site?

American Bladesmith Society

I'm just a hobby maker, with a dark cave for a shop that I get to spend very little time in but I do help teach a knifemaking class once a year with the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland in Westminster, MD. It's not too far a drive from Harrisburg.

We also have the Fire & Brimstone Hammer-In in Marriottsville, MD in March (info isn't posted to the site yet, but should be soon.

There are a lot of makers in the PA/MD area. You may want to make the trip down to the Chesapeake Knife show (I believe it's on December 12th this year at the Crowne Plaza in Timonium, MD). It's a good show and a good place to make the acquaintance of some great makers.

Was hoping to find somebody that I can work with and learn more about the knife making process.

You may well yet find a person to work with you. As a suggestion though, start by getting to know your local makers. Give them a chance to get to know you and see if you get an invite to visit a shop, get some tutoring, etc. For the most part, knifemakers are a great bunch of guys who wouldn't mind helping you get started, but they will generally want to get to know you a bit first. You do have to remember that it is a considerable effort for somebody to teach you. It takes their time and resources much moreso than you may initially realize. the class that I help teach is honestly a great way to get your feet wet in knifemaking with a pretty reasonable outlay of cash. We'll get you forging, heat treating, doing some basic grinding and fit up, and send you home with a knife that just needs a little sandpaper and elbow grease to finish.

Come on down to the show in Timonium, MD next weekend that I mentioned before. I guarantee you'll find several of us from the area around and about. Drop me an email if you're going to come down and I'll let you know when I'll be there, etc so we can chat a bit.
