Does anyone here live in NE Nevada?
My father and I own soem property up there and we've been talking about just picking up and moving the family all together up there. I've heard there's a lot of work, and since I'm no longer tied down here due to recent events. . .

Question is, we're short on money, so it'd be real hard to rent a place. I was wondering what the chances are of getting a well drilled (is the ground frozen?). Maybe if we could just pull a travel trailer up there and get a water hookup on our own property (propane can runt he stove/fridge/heater).

This was our "bug out" location, and we're thinking of doing just that, we just didn't have the funds to finish prepping.

I live in Texas, but sounds like an adventure. My wife and I are setting up a place to be "off the grid" as much as possible. If you have acces to a city or community water supply , I would hookup to that first. Very cheap and quick. Save funds for other things in the beginning. We put a 500 gallon propane tank in the ground, but eventually I don''t want to even depend on that. If you need electricity, set the pole and meter yourself and they will run the wire to it. Home Depot, Lowes all sell the pole and meter already in a package that is to your lacal specs. Check with the local code, but you should be able to put in your septic yourself. Not really difficult. We can put the first one in ourselves without a permit. Any subsequent systems require a permit. Looks like your daylight is prett much the same as mine for solar system.

I wish you all the luck. Remember locals are a great source of info about what works in that area and what doesn't. Hang out a the local Farmers Co-op. Lots of knowledgeable people here and at the other Survival and Wildreness forums.

Man, that sounds liberating. Good on you.

Cpl, I know that life has handed you some lemons, but that sounds like trip of a lifetime. Sadly, it takes so many of us to reach our rope's end before we move out of our comfort zone. I'm saddened by all of your poor fortune, but this could be a real new start.

As always, the Cantina is open 24/7 for support, and maybe even a little "how to" and "do it yourself" as tsf has pointed out (thank you, sir:thumbup:) You can do it, friend!

Well, I live in Reno (west north west Nevada). As to work, in the rural areas it will be feast or famine. Ranching and mining are the big two out in the sticks. It will be worth checking the closest town with more than 1,000 people for job info. Check the paper in Elko ( http://www.elkodaily.com/ ) as a guide to the NE part of the state.
Without being specific as to property location, distance from power and water level and water quality will be the big issues. Wells can run 150 to 300 feet. It does cost. Check online for well drilling in Elko, Winnemucca, or Ely.
It will get cold in the winter (down to -15 at times) and hot in the summer (115 might happen) and unless you are flooded it will be real dry :-) But it is so big and empty, I love it. The smell of sagebrush and desert after a rain is wonderful.
Being 75 miles from a store (any store) is no big thing in rural Nevada. Look up Basque food so you will fit in when you get there. In Elko I like the Star, darn good food. After I send the money to the Blade Forum folks, I'll post a photo of me and my first deer, about 15 miles south east of Denio NV. Denio is north center at the Oregon border
