Anybody know a steel basher...

I really like Lovett's and Young's chute knives, but I want one done by a smith. I collect only forged blades. I know this limits me, but it is the choice I made.

I love chute knives. That's an interesting question. There's a "niche" for a bladesmith to produce Loveless designs.

He had some smokin' looking Loveless style blades at Reno Expo, but with brass guards. Get him to do one in stainless or damascus guard, and I will order one too.

I think that Joe Cordova would be a great choice! He does a bang up job. while I do forge from time to time, I won't make a Loveless design in a forged knife. bob and I have a few agreements. Loveless isn't a forger for his own reasons, and I agree with them. If I made a Loveless by forging, he would take my head off!! Haaa!!! There are a few Damascus Fighters in the new book out about Loveless Knives. Beware! They are fakes. Bob and Jim have not made any damascus fighters, period. I do have a few forged blades at www.photo.epson.com just type in michaellovett@earthlink.net to gain entry. Thanks so much for thinking of me. Mike Lovett http://www.lovettknives.com/

I once saw a Loveless-design "Big Bear" with the RANDALL KNIVES stampings on the blade. Now that is a fake! Or even a Double-fake!

Russ Andrews used to make a heck of a Chute knife. You might be able to persuade him to forge ya one. ;) :)

Asking for one, getting agreement to make one and actually getting the knife are all different things, Dan.

Not to insult Russ in any way, or cast aspersions on his character, as he makes knives about as flawless as possible, but he simply has a long waiting list as it is, like Keith said below. I recommended Joe because he made good looking forged knives in the Loveless style, and is flying under the radar enough that the wait is very reasonable.

I have a couple of knives in the works with Russ already. They will take about another year and a half. If I put another one on order I probably won't see it till 2008.

Cliff Stamp likes to bash all kinds of steel after he tests it......:D

5 1/2", 5160 satin finished blade, gave him the choice of flat or hollow grinding. 416 SS guard, gave him the choice of using black micarta or stabilized wood, mortise or through tang, as I cannot stand an exposed tang on carbon steel. Two 1/4" ss Corby bolts and a lined thong tube. Said it would be ready sometime this summer, and a surprising affordable deal at that!

Act now, boys and girls!

I agree. There are very few smiths making Loveless style knives. It could be the fact that they are all hollow ground, and you don't see a lot of smiths doing hollow ground blades. It could also be that they don't want to do copies of another makers knives, but that sure hasn't stopped the stock removal guys.

When I think about that last comment of mine I realize that it is incorrect. I have seen smiths do very close copies of other makers work. Makers such as Bill Moran, William Scagel and Jerry Fisk. So I guess there just may not be much of a demand for Loveless style forged knives.

I believe the Loveless style knives have been reproduced by so many different makers and done to perfection by people like J. Young that many cannnot get inspired to do it once again. IMHO, People that forge, tend towards, breaking new ground simple because they can manipulate the steel in so many different ways. Oppurtunity ! Sorry, I know this dose not address the original post. I just picked up on what you were saying, Keath. Fred

I have no problem with this thread heading down different paths as the original topic is not one that will tend to get much attention. It has however gotten me in contact with a maker that wants to make me a knife like that which I am looking for.
