For some reason I really like the looks of a Ruger Vaquero - but I'm not too sure about the single action - does anybody know of a quality DA Cowboy looking revolver?

Am I wrong to care about da/sa?

The Colt "Lightning" revolvers were the DA development of the SAA. There are plenty of "reproduction" versions of these available. Very "cowboy".

They are, however, not as robust as the SA guns. That being one of the reasons they never sold as well (the other being the S&W designs of the times being much faster to reload).

Visit a Cowboy Action match....some of those boys can make them SINGLE ACTIONS really SING!

I'm a BROKE Cowboy shooter however the virtue of SA revolvers [Colt, Ruger, modern replicas] is they are bullet-proof..the few replica DA, as noted, are considered fragile by comparison. I own six[6] Vaqueros and one(1) Blackhawk flat top...all good.

All my DA revolvers are S & W...brand loyalty is a character flaw with me [never owned a Winchester for some reason].

Get one of those nifty reproduction S&W break-tops. Snazzy looks and quick reloading.

What exactly gives you reservations about single action?
The ONLY shortcoming I've ever found was fast reloading and if fast reloading is a strong criteria, an auto would be a better consideration than any revolver.
Single action revolvers are tough, accurate, reliable and fun to shoot. Even reloading gets streamlined after a while with practice. If you use your support hand thumb to cycle the action you don't have to change your grip and your follow up shots can be faster.
The Rugers are my favorite, especially the Blackhawk and Single Six.

As a member of SASS and a Cowboy Action Shooter and a fastdraw competitor. Let me put in that SA revolvers are the best, most bullet proof handgun you can have. They are strong, tough, reliable, easy to maintain and reliable. By using the thumb cycle techique described above, they can be very fast. I know! The Vaquero is one of the best SA revolvers out there. I prefer the old Vaquero to the new model but to each his own.

Just held a vaquero, but the handle is too small for my hands... :(

New one or old? Old ones had the same frame as a redhawk

This is my 1 of 500 stainless special sheriff's model in .45lc its an old vaquero the new ones suck..they are Not "Ruger" strong.

Maybe a repro Schofield. Since they are top-break, i assume they're double-action also.

I have a Bisley Vaquero in .45 and a standard old Model Vaquero in .44 Mag. IMO, it is the best of the reproduction SA handguns. You cannot go wrong with the Vaquero, period.
