HEAT: Our house was designed so that heat from the fireplace rises to the bedrooms on the second floor at the opposite end of the house. Think of a wedge laid on its side with the fireplace at the narrow end (point) and the bedrooms at the top of the wide end of the wedge.
Well-insulated house (pays back Sumemr and Winter).
We also have lots of sleeping bags, blankets, and cots.
At a minimum, a fireplace or wood-burning stove will keep a room warm.
This approach, of course, requires a good store of firewood. I watch for freebies all the time. (It's an ill wind blows no one some good.)
WATER: Our drill when a storm is predicted is to fill every available container with water. "Container" includes a couple of plastic trash cans kept for just that purpose. This is water to drink, cook, wash, and flush.
The gas stove works even with no power. Sponge baths work just fine.
More posh than camping out.
We have a couple of water filters if reduced to water from the creek.
FOOD: We keep at least a two week supply of food - probably more if you count all the nuts, dried fruit, etc, that I have on hand for camping/backpacking.
If a real monster storm were predicted, I'd go get more food.
We have a generator to keep the fridge going.
OTHER: What do you need that every house does not already have (e.g. pots and pans are always there)? What do you need for camping?
Flashlights, batteries, candles, back-up propane stove and fuel.
Personal meds - don't let the supply fall below __________ weeks.
