Anybody know what axe this is? Update: Handle recommendations?

The make/maker of this would be very hard to impossible to ever call with any certainty.

The model also can any number of variants, ranging from Southern Europe(Spain/Portugal and east along Mediterranean),or many a South American country.
Something like this would be a common implement at a farm or a forest clearing/logging camp.

It's construction appears to be an asymmetrical wrap for eye, with the blade steel folded in between or skew-welded on one side body of softer iron.
(the eye may've started out round and was distorted by beating on poll).

Such large/deep touch-mark would be uncommon for a smaller,rustic forge,but would be typical for medium/large European/Canadian/American manufacturer/exporter.
If i'm right about the construction method it'd make it quite old,i'd say 50 to a 100 years.

It's a nice axe, appears to be all original tool from some farm, orchard or logging camp,it's appearance not yet modified by anyone with an over-active imagination!:)

Thanks for all the info. I’m intrigued by the axe and it has a really nice balance. I’m hoping some electrolysis will reveal the inside of the mark more as it appears to have some lettering in there. The head feels solidly attached despite the age of the handle but there have been some additional stays placed inside to keep it that way it would appear. Any advice moving forward as I proceed to do some restoring?

Well I'm finally getting around to rehanging this. It is currently in the electrolysis bath and I'm trying to decide what handle to put on it. The handle that was on it was 24 inches long and was more of a tomahawk shape to my eye with a tapered bottom but it was set with a wedge in the top. Any suggestions?

What is the weight of the axe head? You need to measure the size of the eye, but probably safe bet would be to buy pick axe replacement handle and whittle it down to right size. Just make sure to pick one without any runouts.

Check #6 and #7 mattock replacement handles eyes
Thanks that is a very helpful chart. Looks like I'll be doing some moderate shaping with most all of the options but the less the better. Planning on hitting my local hardware store with the head in hand and see what looks the closest. Do you think I should looking in the 24" realm in regards to the weight of the head?
