Just kidding! (anybody hackles get raised?) I know that question got worn out a long time ago...
Seriously, I just got my first truck leaf spring, and forged out and quenched a sample. It got to 65 RC. Seems like 5160 doesn't get that hard. Any ideas what it might be?
I'm not planning on selling any knives made from it, (so don't anybody chew me out for bringing it up) but I thought I should try it at least once in my life.
:D

I'll Play :D Ha ! Ha ! LOL ! you got me with that question . Can't help you on the 65 RC question though , sorry you butt head ;)
BTW you're site looks great.

Truck springs are made out of " some kinda steel". Rc 65 is "some kinda hard". The calibration on hardness testers drifts a good bit. It may not be reading exact. The Rc may be 62 but read 65,which is only a 4% error.

Did you kill that bear that's on your front page?

Your right, my tester is different everyday. :grumpy: But I do have a test block that I paid 60-some $ for, so I take readings off that, and adjust accordingly. One of these days I'm going to make my own test blocks using the steels I use a lot of.

My better half smoked that Bear  It was a dandy ! She was getting ready to take another nice one that came in when that guy came blasting (literally) out of the woods. He hit that other Bear like a freight train ,growling ,snarling & then it turned into a short fight between the two with that one winning ; he lost the next fight which came seconds later in the form of 180 grains @ 3200 fps :) It was something I will never forget (seeing those 2 BIG Bears interacting like that) you could honestly feel that bear come stomping out of the woods.

Impressive! What kind of bear is it, and where was it?
I was hoping you had killed it with a knife. Wouldn't that be a good advertisement? :D
