Anybody know what type of steel is used in the Schrade SCHF3?

I do not know which Chinese alloy Taylor brands is having their Chinese suppliers use. Even the Taylor Brands web site only describes it as "stainless".

In case anyone else is interested, I just heard back from the production and quality control manager at Taylor Brands.
The steel is 7cr17Mo.

Thanks for sharing. Always good to know these things.
That would put it somewhere between AUS 6 and AUS 8, but closer to AUS8. The actual performance will depend also on how hard they run it.
The ranges on the Chinese steels tend to be broader than those of Japanese, Swedish, German or American alloys.

If SCHF3 is 440C, why doesn't Taylor Brands advertise it as such? Better yet, why don't they stamp "440C" on the blade?

The problem with advertising a knife as being constructed of "stainless steel" is that the manufacturer can change the alloy at any time without notice. So an SCHF3 manufactured of 440C today could be made out of of 420J2 tomorrow.

And probably already is!

I veer away from any Taylor Cutlery knives (and practically everyone else's knives) made out of unspecified "stainless steel". Some of Taylor's knives, however, are constructed of carbon steel (e.g., 1070) and have proven themselves to be pretty tough. So I try to take them one at a time.
