Jimmy Fallon has been off my radar screen. I remember his movie about the Red Sox and some of his SNL skit but overall, he's managed to elude my full attention. Anyhoo, the TV got left on NBC and I half accidentally watched his Late Night program. This guy is crazy funny. Dare I say, this dude is freakishly Dean Martinesque. Great program. Anybody like this guy's body of work?

Sheesh. No love for Fallon eh? Ever since Johnny Carson hung it up and Letterman went to CBS, there's been no late night programming that's been worth a hoot (as we old school folks think of late night programming). When I seen Fallon's show I was instantly reminded of Johnny Carson and Dean Martin. And to a lesser extent, Dave in the old NBC days. Smack. Hit. Bam! I've watched exactly ONE of Fallon's late night programs and I've come to the conclusion he's way funnier than ANY late night program since Johnny walked off the stage. Period. Leno couldn't make a retard laugh if he was equipped with a full tank of nitrous and a face mask. Conan is a sad example of what can happen when a writer should have stayed in the office. And that dude from the Man Show is about as funny as the pig flu. The bar for late night isn't all that high right now, and in my opinion, Fallon has blown everyone out of the water. In fact, I think he's on par with the old greats. Time will tell. I'm certainly gonna be watching his show from now on. I've really missed late night variety shows these past fifteen years or so. Leno was such a lame choice. I've often wondered what he had on Johnny. Pictures? Video? Something... There's no way Johnny would have handed the torch to someone so lame without having been forced in some way. Johnny knew talent and Leno is a comedic cupcake. Fallon really caught my attention. I'll be watching his show for the next few weeks. Time will tell. :)

Fixed it for ya.

Early Letterman was ok, only because there weren't 6 late night shows and he was a little meaner and cruder then Carson which appealed to some folks. Top 10 list and stupid pet tricks appealed to the drunken college crowd.

There will never be another Johnny or Dean.

To clarify something... I know Deano's show wasn't broadcast late at night, but I've always considered his "variety" format a late night "style" TV show and have always considered his show to be in direct comparison to late night TV. In my opinion, his show was the greatest of the genre, followed closely by Johnny. Dave (you are correct) appealed to the college crowd while he was on NBC. But I'd put his shows from that era right up there also. When he went to the Ed Sullivan theater, it was all over but the cryin'.

Just wanted to clarify how I'm lumping Deano in with the late night crowd... :cool:

Me no likey. I use to watch SNL until he ruined it for me. Cant stand his little girly laugh that he could never contain during his lame skits.

Late night comedy died when Carson died. Only Letterman comes close (his early years).

Note: Thank You... NBC... for putting Jimmy Fallon on so late... that I'm usually... unconscious... by that time of night.

For late night I like Craig Ferguson.

Jimmy Fallon can actually be pretty funny. He did this thing where he sang a funny song mimicing a bunch of famous bands and her was really really awesome. He sang and played guitar. At least I think it was Jimmy Fallon, I heard it on SIRIUS. He is not very good on late night because he is seems like he isn't very sure of himself.

I find Jimmy Fallon to be profoundly unfunny. He's so tremendously unfunny it's difficult for me to watch him.

I am absolutely shocked someone gave him a late night show, and didn't even know about it until this thread.

I might give his show a try if I'm up that late, but I'm expecting to hate it.

I miss Carson.

I like Leno to a point. His stuff is getting old, and with Eubanks leaving, his show may be needing a defibrillator.

Fallon sucks.

Good point... I also like Craig Ferguson.

Carson was "IT". He was naturally funny (an understatement), AND he could interview a guest better than anyone. Letterman, and Ferguson are also GREAT at interacting with guests. Leno has ALWAYS sucked at interviewing guests... so did O'Brien, and so does Fallon.

For example (Leno, or O'Brien, or Fallon interviewing an interesting guest with their script of prepared questions)

=======================

Leno - So you had to do a same sex love scene in your latest movie. How did that go?

Guest - During the scene, I really enjoyed it, and frankly, I've now realized that I am more attracted to people of my same sex, and my co-star and I plan on getting married!

Leno - So you shot the film in New Zealand, what was that like?

======================

The guest drops a bombshell and Leno/O'Brien/Fallon can't see the opportunity to go off script. They don't have any ability to go into a spontaneous mode... I've seen this... IDIOTS!!!

Carson, Letterman, and Ferguson are comfortable to "go with it"... smoothly jump onto the bombshell and create some GREAT entertainment from it.

This ability by the way, is what put Carson head and shoulders above EVERYONE else... I've seen him keep a guest on for the ENTIRE show (bumping all others) because Carson realized he had something special going on with THIS guest, and he'd run and run and RUN with it for the entire show.

I prefer Craig too, he seems more genuine

I like Craig Ferguson because he reminds of a couple of Scotsmen that I used to play rugby with that were pretty dang funny in their own way. That said, I think Fallon is pretty good. I caught a bit he was doing with Mick Jagger where he was trying to get Mick to be more "Mick Jagger-esque". Did a pretty funny physical impersonation of Jagger. I cannot stand Leno, I will watch Dave in that time slot. Thought Conan was good too... he totally got jobbed by NBC and Leno.

His movies are (were) crap in my opinion, and I hated his Late Nite show at first, but he has improved the show ten fold since he started. I really enjoy watching now, when I can. He seems like a class act, brings a new style (cough...get a clue Leno...Cough) and respects those who deserve the respect. I think he has the best late Nite show on these days.

I have seen Conan O'Brien go off the script just about every show he did. Not sure what you are talking about

Yes, I've seen Conan go off script too, but normally only to allow Conan to get laughs. Unfortunately, O'Brien's interview style tends to up-stage his guests in order to make himself the center of attention.
