I was at the East Coast Custom Knife Show on Friday. It was great! The place was packed and some makers had no knives left on their table after a couple of hours. I picked up a beauty from Kaj Embretson, a classic from Kouji Hara, and somethin from a new fellow named Nillson who makes Laplander knives with reindeer horn sheaths. I can't wait to get back there tomorrow. Anybody else there? What did you get? What were some of your impressions

I can't believe that I was there 6 hours on Friday, time sure flys when you're having fun. I didn't have as much fun as you did, all I came away with was this 3" skinner by Russ Easler.

Let's see if Spark fixed this?

yitz, sounds like you have a real impressive collection, you must live in the Rich part of Brooklyn!

Nice knife, Phil! I bought an Easler myself, a dagger.

I also picked up a unique little Crawford neck knife.

Brian, it was good to see you there, you did well for yourself. Two very nice knives, I saw the Easler Daggers, I liked the ones with the matching wood handles and matching wood sheaths, but I wanted something with stag.

Don't count the days to the next show, there are knives between now and then. I just a ordered my first custom knife, I have two handmades, the Easler and GenO Denning, but this will be the first knife being made just for me. There's something special about your first, isn't there?

My drawings for it are at my PhotoPoint site, Works in Progress, http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=254126&a=1889226

alas the polkowski scorpion slipped my hands by an hour.. but ths being my first show it was real fun.. i got to rub elbows with the best of them.

Great Show! Wish I came home with a knife or two, but instead I sold 5! Russell makes a beautiful piece. I had those wood sheathed daggers for a couple months. They were pretty. I'm putting together a web site for Russell and maybe Ron Gaston, too. I'll let you guys know when it's up.

BTW the deal of the show was RJ Matrtin's Handyman. $145.00!!! Can't beat it!

Doc4570 also picked up a small skinner similar to yours, Phil. Easler had a bunch of really nice pieces, including some with GORGEOUS scrimshaw work. I liked a couple of the nudes -- frontal view on one scale & back view on the other -- but they were a bit over my budget for the show. Besides, I was afraid I would be sleeping on the couch for a while if I brought one home.

I'm glad to hear you did well too, Chris, & I'm happy to learn that you're working on setting up a site for Russ Easler. As I just said, he's got some really pretty stuff. I also agree about RJ's Handiman. If I am not mistaken, he has changed the lines slightly from that shown on his Web site. It seems to me that it now has a bit more belly with just a hint of a recurve. I believe it now comes with a removable MCS clip rather than just the neck sheath pictured.

Tim, it was a pleasure meeting you and seeing your work in person, truly beautiful. I was with TomW at your table, I'm glad you Tom and Les all made it out alive

You really are all terrific guys.

Sounds like I wasn't the only one to have fun. Hey PhilL, to get great knives, you don't have to come from the rich part of Bklyn, just the crazy part. Sunday was a more relaxed day at the show. Less people, more time to chat and renew old acquaintences.

No problem, Tim. It's not often I get to stand at a table with beautiful art folders and take credit for making them.

Besides, getting to visit with my neighbor, Jim Schmidt, is always a pleasure. Jim's a great guy. You were lucky to get a table next to him.

Russ Easler has Denise Kondrla doing his scrimshaw. She is underated as a scrimshander. Her stuff is beautiful, especially the nudes! Anyone looking for a quality knife with the finest scrim, without shelling out big $$ should contact Russell. his website is http://www.geocities.com/roeasler/page1.html

yitz, my guess is you live in the eccentric part of Brooklyn. Crazy people don't own a Scagel.

sniperboy,

Yep, I'm the culprit! Don't feel so bad, I got it for a friend. It was VERY HARD to package it last night & have it sent out today...

The saving grace is that I will have my very own in a couple of weeks...

Al's knives are VERY hard to come by. Do yourself a favor & put an order in with Les. He can get you anything you want in a VERY timely fashion.
