If any of ya'll own, or have any experience with the Bark River Trailing Point Skinner, I would be interested in hearing your opinions on the knife. I do not own any Barkies yet, but I feel like I should, and I came across a deal on this skinner that says it is a Limited Edition. Do they all say that? Anyways, I am thinking about buying it just because it is too good of a deal and I know Bark River doesn't make any "bad" knives.

Hey Tolly

Sorry, I don't have the Trailing Point Skinner, so I can't give you any specifics on the knife.

But from familiarity with Bark River, I can tell you that "Limited Edition" means that they made only a single run with no expectation to make more.

I can also tell you that the Trailing Point has a hollow ground blade with a convex edge. Mike says he will no longer make any hollow ground blades - he doesn't like them, and prefers full convex ground blades.

Cheers!

Hey Tolly,
I wouldn't think a trailing point skinner would be a Bark River knife to start out with, but that's just my opinion, it's not based on experience. It just doesn't seem ideal, with it's upswept point.

Bark River has quite a few models. You may know about these sites, but if not, here goes:
http://www.dlttradingcompany.com/
DLT is a good place to buy Bark Rivers, along with http://www.knivesshipfree.com/.

To see all of Bark Rivers models, with specifications, go here:
http://www.barkriverknives.com/home.html

In the right pane, click on current production. Each model is listed with specs. If you click on any model, you'll see several handle options.

Also, for the "almost" complete line, go to Bark River's site (I don;t know why their home page has less models than the Society site above)

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here, please elaborate.

It is definitely a Bark River knife, as I have held it in my hand and looked at it. It actually looks like it would be a pretty good big game skinner. here is the knife in question right here http://www.knivesshipfree.com/Bark-...Point-Skinner-Amboynia-Burl/product_info.html

The Trailing Point Skinner is a nice knife. It is every bit the quality all of the other BRKT knives are, but the hollow grind makes it an inaccurate representation of the BRKT line.

Mike Stewart is totally sold on the convex grind (I think he is right).

If you like the knife, it will perform very well, but slightly different from their other blades.

Other makers love hollow grinds. For a hollow ground knife, it is excellent!

Just going off the hollow grind vs. the convex grind, the Trailing Point Skinner would be a great skinning knife (duh!) as the hollow grind is great for slicing. It would not be as great a woods knife, as the hollow grind would tend to bind in deeper cuts.

For a combo skinner/woods knife, something like the Upland or the Big Mountain Skinner, both with a convex grind, would be better - I think! Remember I haven't actually used the Trailing Point Skinner!

All I was trying to say was: if it's your style of knife, then it definitely IS the right Bark River to start with. My reasoning here is you've seen all the Bark River's and this is the one you want as your first Barkie.

However, if it ain't, then it surely aint. My reasoning here is, perhaps you haven't seen them all..... The trailing point skinner has an upsweep extra-generous curve from belly to tip. A good skinner...no doubt.

Sorry for the confusion.

Oh no no no no guys, I didn't explain it like I should have. There are lots of Bark River Knives that I like MUCH better than this knife. As a natter of fact, I find the Trailing Point Skinner a little ugly looking myslf. The only reason I was even considering buying it is because it is WAY too cheap to pass up, and I just wanted everyone's opinion on it. Hell, I will probably never use the knife. I am kind of funny about skinning knives, and all of the ones I currently use were custom made for me by R.G. Epting here in Texas. I should have been more clear..sorry about that

As far as the Barkies go, I do like the looks of the Fox River, the Bravo-1, and I love that little Black Water Boot knife.

By the way Stretch, I've got lots of kin folks in Alamagordo and Ruidoso. One of my cousins is a guide in and around Cloudcroft.

hey Tolly,
I've got a Barkie Trailing Point (snakewood handle) which I like plenty....mind you, I haven't used it to skin any animals with it..... but the edge geometry makes really quick work of cardboard boxes.....it went through them like butter.... the 12c27 steel seems to hold a decent edge and is easy to maintain with a leather strop......I liked mine so much I ended up snagging a Mesquite handled one too (both through DLT).....both have a "Limited Edition" mark on the blade.....I'm not too fond of the leather sheaths so I got Sharpshooter to construct a kydex one for me..... A great blade that might not look too pretty but once you use it you'll love it.... :)
