I just picked up 2 new Protech Ciabatta's. One all black and the other with a mirror finished blade jazz handle. My favorite assisted opener was the Benchmade Apparition but imho now Protech has the best. This knife is just as fast as a godfather, absolutely solid lockup, great design, scary sharp, and more. The opening system is simple and easy once you know it, although it would be tough to figure out without the instructions. It seems like an auto to me but I'll take Protech's word for it that it is really an assisted opener. I really like this knife. Does anybody else have any experience with this knife and what do you think?

Well don't own that particular knife but have a TR3 and without a doubt the finest auto opener I have ever owned bar none. These include, MT, Paragon, Dalton, and Ox forge black knife. keepem sharp

I've looked at them but can't figure out how they work with the assist. Any secrets or just like an Apparition?

Ever see this GF demo? I wish they'd get one for this model. Greatest knife reviews on the net, IMHO.

What exactly does "Ciabatta" mean? Or is is it just some name they came up with? Maybe it should have been "Godmother"?

It is difficult to explain and the directions that come with it sound complicated, but it is a simple system. The blade opens when the blade tip is pointed up, and it locks closed when the blade is pointed down. In addition there is a safety lock that keeps it closed at all times. To release the blade, you pull it in to the handle slightly and then release it and at the same time move your fingers out of the way. The blade then snaps open. The button is used only to unlock the blade to close it.

Diggerdog, how does this opening mechanism and the way you have to hold the knife to use it feel? Are you able to get a good enough grip on the knife to open it confidently with consistency? I really like the concept of this knife, I just wonder if it's more clever than needed to be practical for carry.
