Anybody Quench In Antifreeze?

I FINALLY came into the light and started using real quenching oil.

I have quenched in a lot of crap, but never antifreeze. I have quenched in Dawn dishwashing detergent heated to 140 degrees. Worked like a champ.

But.....

Since I've stated using real quenchant, my warpage and crackage has gone to near ZERO :D

Yes,
Tried it on 2 1095 blades and one cable blade. It did work well...BUT!.
I never would of thought that anti-freeze burns. After the second blade went in the quench the whole shabang lit lit up like an alchohol fire and wouln't go out. If you try it stay away from the fumes and don't do more than one at a time. Let the stuff cool down or try it with 50/50 mix.
(stick with tranny fluid)
Good Luck.

Hey Adam, Len Landrum did some tests with 52100 and quenching in anti-freeze. While I was never privy to the micrographs, I'm told that they were "off the chart" in terms of grain size... apparently the researchers at Mississippi State who did the imaging had never seen results as good with that steel before at the time he did the tests... you'll have to contact him for any details...I've not used it myself...I stick to Parks 50 and AAA...they're fast enough for my comfort level!
