Anybody taken the spike out of the War Club?

Just like the title says, I am curious about the spike in the ball-head club. I picked up one during the Christmas sale, and the spike is really too pointy to leave it lying about. It's in there too good to loosen by hand if it's threaded, and I don't want to go wrenching away if it's epoxied in. I don't want grind down the tip in place because I don't want to risk melting out the socket. Anybody been here?

I recently purchased one, but received an older model with the flattened metal knob. I had heard that they are detachable, but I don't know how they are installed. Perhaps a call or email to CS would help.
