So I was browsing through the Emerson website and saw the .45 headstamp thumb disk that is available for $60. Here is the picture off of Emersons site if you are not aware of what I am talking about:

I thought it was a great idea, but the .45 headstamp seemed too big to me. So, I decided maybe I would try to make my own with a .40 casing. Well, as I was looking for a .40 casing I picked up a 9mm casing and realized it is the exact same size as the actual Emerson thumb disk. Here is a comparison from left to right: 9mm, thumb disk, .45 ACP:

The next two pictures are of the thumb disk directly over the 9mm headstamp

And now the thumb disk over the .45 ACP headstamp

Anyway, I decided I would use the 9mm casing because I like the size of the thumb disk and think the .45 is too large. Heres what I ended up with:

First off, do you guys think the .45 headstamp is too large, or is that just me? Second, How did I do?

I can't believe they would charge $60.00 for that.
What a joke:thumbdn:

By the way, you did and awesome job on yours. What are you in it. Maybe 50 cents?.

I thought the same thing. The 45acp is too big for a thumb disc. I was going to do exactly what you did. I am gonna do it with nickle plated brass. I have 9mm, 40 s&w, 357, 10mm to try it with. I am just gonna take the dremmel and zip off a few to see what I like.

The nickle plated would be cool! It would go well with a satin blade and it would make a cool contrast with a black blade. Good luck and let us know which caliber you think turns out best.

They are not made by Emerson, they are from Steel Flame - and everything they make is costly. Have not seen their stuff in person, so I can't say if I think it's worth it......

I just went down to my reloading bench and picked out a few different brass. The problem is most like the 357mag and 10mm have their primer pockets too deep. You will have to cut below the rim of the casing and will leave a cup looking disc. Anything larger than a 9pm will also have to be notched out on both sides of the rim of the case to have the disc recess down on the blade so it is flush in the thumb disc pocket.

i looked at their products at the plaza show.

everything is very nicely finished, and probably fairly labor intensive.

but just like with starlingear, i think the prices are extremely high for novelty items.

Dumb question, but I don't know much about reloading. Is there an easy way to take the top of the casing off a spent shell? I think I would like the look of a Speer Gold Dot +P 9mm thumb disc. :)

My first attempt, I just used a belt sander and sanded it down to just the head. Problem was it heated up and discolored the casing.

For this one, I used tin snips to cut off all of the tube and then used the belt sander to sand it down to the level I wanted, making sure not to let it heat up this time.

I like mystros idea of just using a dremel. For some reason I didnt think of that as I was making mine.

Heres a video I made on it. I appologize to the gun guys for going into the schematics of a 9mm round lol. Figured I would do that for anybody who isnt a shooter.
