Anybody use a sheath or pouch for your folder?

After removing the clip on a couple of my knives (Lochsa & Obie M2), I'm thinking about using some sort of pouch so the knife doesn't fall horizontal all the way at the bottom of my front pocket. I also hope to keep any pocket junk out of the pivot by carrying it in a pouch.

I picked up the following Clip Case made by William Henry (on left w/clip). I found it in black and it's the right design but a hair too small for my Lochsa as it's designed for their T12 folders. I also ordered their Slip Case pouch (on right w/out clip) but now that I've tried the Clipped version, I'm sure this one will be a bit too small as well.

I later found the Chris Reeve Protective Calfskin Pouch made for Large and Small Sebenzas. I ordered the model for the Lg Sebbie, figuring its dimensions are likely close to my Lochsa.

Anybody know of any other pouches I could try in addition to those pictured above? Note: I don't want to carry the knife & sheath/pouch on a belt, but rather in pocket. I'm guessing my best bet would be to have one made by one of our leather working forum members, but I can't imagine sending out the Lochsa and being without it for that period of time :) In addition, most of the items I've seen are for belt carry.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Here's an idea you might want to try. I can't take credit for this, it was one of my customers ideas. Anyway if you're handy with leather it's very simple to make. It's kind of difficult to explain but I'll try Take a piece of leather about 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches wide. The length will depend on how long the knife is. Most folders are about 4 inches closed. This is just an example size. The length of the leather would then be 3 inches wide allowing an inch of the handle to stick out. Lay the knife on the rough side of the leather fold over one side of the leather to cover the knife. Mark where the edge of the leather meets the other side of the leather with a pencil line. Roughly 2 to 3 inches toward the center of the piece of leather. You can ethier rivet or sew the fold. After you rivet or sew, cut the opposite side away from the knife on a downward anngle toward the bottom of the knife. Next wet the leather and insert the knife and shape the leather around the handle. Removve knife and let sheath dry. After it's dry you can dye it. This can be trimmed according to pocket size.If this is hard to understand, you can e-mail me and I'll send you a drawing. ScoGo@aol.com It's tough to explain in writing. Scott

Some time ago, I started carrying my pocket clip folders inside my pocket, using a simple sheath I made from a piece of leather, cut to about 6-1/4" by 3-1/4". I simply folded the leather over, rough side out, and fastened it together with a couple Chicago screws, leaving it open at the bottom as well as the top.

Clipped inside the sheath, the folder rides vertically inside my right jean pocket. The rough leather being out keeps the sheath in the pocket when I draw the knife. So, no more exposed clips, and no more problem with knives shifting around loose in my pocket.

After losiong two knives when they slipped out of the pocket of slacks when I sat down :grumpy: I almost always use some sort of pouch. For my SAK I have one of the victorinox belt sheaths which I just put in my pocket. For my other knives I generally make some sort of sheath/ pouch out of leather

Try getting hold of Lifter4him on this forum. He does some real nice leather work. I hope this does not amount to "commercialization" on the forum, but Dave is quite well known around here for his work.

I carry my small Sebenzas in a belt pouch, and my Umfaan and Mnandi in slip pouches.

'Pocket holsters' are rather easy to make.

The length and width dimensions are such that the holster itself is stable in the pocket, just as your wallet is stable in your pocket. Within those outside dimensions, stitch a 'pocket' to contain the (knife or small pistol) in the desired attitude (vertical, tilted, etc.).

Construction takes about an hour of your time. Ordinary felt is an excellent material. The fibrous nature of felt resists movement in the pocket, but metal objects extract easily with very low friction. You need only the felt, a large needle, button thread, felt material and imagination. One layer per side is enough to hold a folder upright, two layers per side is much more rigid. Weight is much less than leather.

I prefer to roll the two sides (4-layer total thickness) with the rolled surfaces at the top of the holster. This is less 'floppy' and makes insertion easier.

Felt material is inexpensive and available in 12" X 12" squares at Walmart and other stores in the fabrics section.

I store my knives in stitched-compartment roll-up pouches made of felt.

Paul, thx for the tips. Can you be more specific about the slip pouches? Are they the one's sold by CRK or the same idea? If not, can you share some photos? Thanks.

bladefixation2 & ColoradoDave, thanks to both of you for the info. Do either of you have pics you can share?

Appreciate the help guys.

Sack-Ups are simple and neat, although they might be considered a bit "utilitarian".

The flap never wants to stay closed, and I find I use it for a locator and extractor from my pants pocket.

Search www.Froogle.com for Sack-ups (note the spelling and hyphen) to find vendors and prices.

I use an Uncle Mikes pocket holster to carry my Leatherman Juice and Cross Ion pen. Just sew it down the middle.

What about using a magazine pouch to hold a knife? I was at an army surplus store recently, and many of the magazine pouches I saw looked about the right size for a pocket knife.

Thanks Vincent. I remember seeing that photo and always wondered what that little pouch was called. I just ordered a few of those. Seems they'd work well for storage as well and you certainly can't beat the price. Just under $8 for a six pack. Not too bad.

Patrick,
I carry my Umfaan in a CRK slip pouch, my Mnandi in a ballistic nylon belt pouch in my pocket. I haven't got a CRK pouch for it yet.

Interesting. I went just the opposite way, using a knife pouch to carry an extra 1911 mag in my pocket.

MtMike will be making me a belt pouch for my large classic Sebbie and the clip will be gone. Will also be for tip down carry which I prefer.

Felt pouches really work. I like to carry slipjoints, but talk about grit/fuzz magnets. They also fall horizontally in the pocket; that's no good. My wife made up a batch of felt pouches for me - a simple job on the sewing machine. They measure 7" x 1.5". The sides are whip-stitched, the bottom doesn't need stitching; that's where the fold is, and of course the top is open. Key to the design is allowing an exta 1.5" inch or so flap at the top. This isn't actually to close the pouch; rather, that extra material 1) is key to keeping the pouch horizontal in the pocket, and 2) is what you grab to draw - pull the whole pouch out and you can just drop the knife into your hand. They really work, and keep your knives vertical, clean and scratch-free. They also double as storage pouches. And they're cheap. I get about a year's heavy use from one. Use a wool or other heavy felt.

Patrick - sorry, I don't have any photographs (and if I did, I'd be too ashamed of them, compared to yours, to post 'em.)

It's really a very simple item: just a flat, folded-over piece of leather, resulting in a sheath about 3-1/4" high and just slightly wider than 3". Of course you could stitch, glue, or rivet it together; I just happened to have some Chicago screws around. It holds a folder up to 4-1/2" - 5" closed length very nicely. Leaving the bottom open gives more flexibility in how long a knife it will hold, and keeps lint 'n stuff from building up inside.

One thing I didn't mention, I rounded the corners of the leather. So, when carried, I put the folded side forward in my pocket; the side to the back, which is held together with the two Chicago screws, has the rounded corners. Hope that helps you visualize. It ain't exactly pretty, but it works well.

BTW, I came up with these diminsions experimentally, carrying a piece of thick cardboard around in my pocket for a while with a folder clipped to it, trimming to fit so as to see what rode well, and carried flat and well-concealed.

I have a large collection of small linerlock folders, slipjoints, and lockbacks without clips. I've made pocket pouches for all of them using scraps of leather from my local Tandy outlet and a leather adhesive they sell called "Barge Cement". It's claimed to make a joint as strong and permanent as anything you can sew.

Here's a sheath I use sometimes, pictured here with my Strider SMF. Available from magills.com Fits Sebenza sized knives well also
