I'm looking for a really idiot proof shapener that doesnt cost alot of money and this comes close to perfect if it works. I was wondering if anybodys used one and if it works well.

I have not seen much discussion on this, one problem I would have is that rods are very prone to burr formation, and it doesn't look like there is a simple way to adjust the edge angles like you can do on v-rods by just adjusting the angle of the base. Maybe CRKT could provide one for the pass around forum.

I thought it looked like a good idea at first, but the problem I see is not having a clear view of when the tip of the blade gets to the rod. You want to avoid letting the blade slip off of the rod because it blunts the tip. A few slips won't do major damage, but the CRKT system looks like it would be hard not to do this because the whole thing is covered over.

I only ever used rods for light pressure finishing until I started using the Sharpmaker by Spyderco. The rods have flat sides so you can use a flat surface rather than the corners which result in pressure on a smaller area. Spyderco says to use the corner first for faster steel removal, but I usually just use the flat sides inless I need the corner of the rod for a serrated or reverse-curved blade. I have also used the corners for faster sharpening on blades that need major work, but I think I am going to go back to flat diamond stones for that in the future.

I just received one last week. I haven't had much time to use it, but I wanted to address two things.

1. You cannot adjust the angles, but it does come with TWO guides. One is for 15 degrees and the other for 20 degrees. It looks like you could easily make guides from plastic rod stock to any angle you want.

2. Although you cannot see the tip, it doesn't take but a few minutes practice to keep from running it off the rod. CRKT's instructions say to stop short of the tip and then go back and use tiny strokes to sharpen just the tip. That seems to work.

I have an old, grubby, and very dull Gerber Halsey Air Ranger that I want to use as a test. I'll report more when I have a chance to really sit down and use it.

I'm still wrestling with whether to turn in my generic rod system and get the Spyderco ..... or something else. Want to switch from stones.
