Hey Gang,

I am considering purchasing the Razor Edge Basic system to help me learn how to sharpen Freehand. The plan is to purchase DMT stones and couple those with the R.E. Guides and go at it. Has anyone done this? Did it help / would you recommend it?

FYI - Currently I use the Sharpmaker and Strops for all touch ups. I would like to learn Freehand to take care of harder sharpening tasks.

Thanks in advance.

I purchased both the Cub and the regular guides. I have had excellent results with them. I did not purchase the Razor Edge stones, though. I went for a DMT DIASharp coarse and an Arkansas Black and Hard Black stone for the finishing touches. The guides are excellent for training yourself on the proper technique and angle. If you're going to do traditional sized pocket knives, you'll definitely need the Cub. If you're doing medium to larger blades, you'll need the regular guide. The choice of stones is entirely up to you, but if you have medium to larger size blades, an 8x2 is the absolute smallest size stone that you will be happy with.

Agree, I didn't buy the Razor Edge system specifically to learn to sharpen freehand, but that it is what taught me to sharpen freehand.
