Now how the heck did a Texas catfish get all the way out there to Santa Rosa, and in salt water no less? :D

Sarge

I'm going with a 14 ft great white that can be driven off by hitting it's tail :D

Wow...

Reminds me of something I heard about when I was in California earlier this year...

Two guys were sea kayaking and a shark attacked one of their boats. They managed to get the boats to shore in one of the state or county wildlife areas. The rangers came up to fine them for landing in a protected area. Once they showed them the teeth marks in the boat, they were let off...

man, you guys are dumb...that's clearly a surfboard...

mauirob gets the cigar for identifying the "Great White with extra sensitive tail"
A rare fish, but it gets some press occasionally.

my thought is....if I'm on a boat and need to defend myself against a shark, I'm pretty much going to just "feed him" to keep him happy.

So, just make sure you're NOT standing next to me....:p

I think that's a good idea. Keep a couple caged Racoons handy for just such an event.

munk

Its not just the radius of the bite but the area the jaws had to encompass as well . It looks like the shark bit down over that surfboard fin and still managed to chomp down eight inches farther along on the board .
As for smacking a geat white on the tail ? Just how are you going to do that from the inside of the shark ? L:O:L

In my previous life sharks were considered an occupational hazard and one that I occasionally worried about. I did some reading about how best to deal with a shark when you're in the water.

The result of my research? Stay out of the water. ;) Nothing seemed reliable.

A shipmate on my gun mount once said that if we were ever forced to abandon ship, he'd be taking the M14 with him because of the sharks.

"Let me get this straight," I said. "You're going to tread water with all the crap that we're wearing, and a loaded M14, and you'll somehow be able to shoot sharks?"

"Not sharks," he said. "But I'll shoot anyone in the life boat who won't give up a seat for me."

It did make a certain amount of sense.

I think Dan Koster has the right idea: I don't have to outswim the shark. I just have to outswim the folks around me. ;)
