Anybody want to send this kid a couple of bucks for living expenses besides me?

I've stuck three pix in here for those newer folks who may not have seen them before. These are scenes from Bishwakarma Puja 2000 when I was in Nepal.

One shows Sgt. Karka after he just successfully beheaded the sacrificial goat -- grim determination. Another shot shows Sgt. Karka giving me a tika -- the Bishwakarma blessing -- that's Ramasore with his back to us. And, the group shot of the kamis chowing down on goat tarkari. In this shot Ram is the kid who shows up as a half person on the right.

Ram's story is the classic example of giving a hook and line rather than a fish. If he succeeds in his studies this kid will come back to Nepal and care for thousands of sick and needy folks and will insure that his own family is cared for in their old age. We've got him this far and I don't want to quit now so I'm going to send him a few dollars for his living expenses. If anybody else wants to kick in a few bucks send a check, paypal, or buy something off the shopping site and tag it "Ram".

I've included my last email to Ram and his response.

Hello Ram:

Many thanks for staying in touch.

It looks like you have your work cut out for you for awhile but it will be worth it. Study hard and do your best. I know you can make it.

Your father and family will be very proud of you and it is our hope that you will be able to care for them in their old age. All this makes me very happy.

Pala has been here in the US for a visit. He was here for about 6 or 7 weeks but returned to Nepal last week. The shop does not do well when he is gone.

Well, we are also busy here so I must sign off for now but I will try to answer every email that you send. I know it must be pretty lonely for you in Latvia. Are there any other Nepalis around?

Blessings and best of luck in your effort,

Bena

Blessings from the computer shack in Reno.

Respected bena,

I am very greatful to you.I am very thankful for your fruitful suggestion.

(Please keep on giving such fruitful suggestions.)

Dear bena my aim is to be a good doctor. And I will serve my innocent village people. As you know bishwokarama cast is very backward .And of course,I will take care of my parents. As you know,by simple Army service and khukuri business (ed. my bold),my father afford my tuition fee for this year. And for living and fooding expenses ,I am trying to find job.Still I could not able to get ,I hope I will get job in summer vacation.

I am the only boy to pass grade 12 in science .And I am the only boy to study medicine in my locality. My aim is really high, and its really hard for me to achieve the success. But I am ouite determined to get the sucess.

I have one nepali friend here in latvia.I am living with him .He is helping a lot for fooding as well as living.

I become first in my group. And medicing is really very hard .In 24 hour ,we have to study 16 hour.

I pray to the god for your good business.

And please take care of your health.

And DEAR DIDI ,a very sweet rememberance from the core of the heart.

Yours lovingly

Well, hell. For some reason I can't figure out the pix are not showing up. Pen, are you around?

Paypal incoming.

I'm not much for donating to the charities that the US government considers tax deductable. However, chipping in something for a hard-working young man who wants to be a doc in Nepal is more up my alley. I wouldn't even do this if the solicitation came from a TV preacher in the mail. But if it comes from Bill I know the funds will get to where they are needed.

I remember having ill people in remote Nepalese villages swarm around me because I was a westerner with a first aid kit. Some of the infections and injuries were pretty gruesome. A doc there has his work cut out for him.

Sounds like a worthy young man Uncle. Check sent, may take two to three weeks, but it'll get there.:D

Hi Uncle Bill,
Is there a way to send money by paypal, so that you won't get taxed? Or would a check be better. Just let me know how or where.

Steve

The check works best. I run it thru my personal account. But, we'll take anything we can get, including sales on the shopping site.

Howard makes a very strong point based on personal observation -- and anybody who has been to the rural areas of Nepal makes the same observation and draws the same conclusion.

A doctor who makes the rounds of a few villages is a Godsend. It's my hope that Ram will do just this.

Sgt Karka entered the Nepalese Army at age 15. He'd much rather have gone into the British Army but that was impossible because he was illiterate -- the fate of many poor kamis as witnessed in our very own BirGorkha. But, with great determination and dedication he rose to topkick in the Nepal Army because one way or the other he managed to get the job done. A man willing to spend his life savings and sell his home to educate his son has got the right stuff. My hat's off to him and if Ram succeeds this will be the answer to an old warhorse's wildest dreams.

" What comes around goes around Duck"

You could pull my toenails out with pliers and I wouldn't breath a word about why, but here's the what of it; A check for 100 bucks, I'm sending in honor of "Saint" Tsimi to help a worthy young man engaged in a noble purpose.

By golly that puts a grin on a feller's face, one good turn deserves another. Touche' and well met Jim.:p :D :p

Many thanks to both Sarge and Saint. Take a look at the "Thanks from Ram" thread to get an idea of just how much this gesture will be appreciated.
