Anyone able to I.D. this Japanese sword

I recently found this sword in my grandfathers belongings (no sheath/pommel/handle). Can anyone help identify what it is how old and value?http://postimg.org/gallery/q3y3qau/ If you cant see the measurement is 27 inches from tip to where the pommel should be. Any info would be helpfull. Thanks everyone!

I would recommend posting the pictures here or at one of the Nihonto forums just in case. "Military place" <> Knowledgeable sword place in most cases.
