I received a buck 124 frontiersman to put a mirror edge on...so I'm in the process of reprofiling and I notice these pot holes in the bevel...when under a bright light they seem to marred puddles of metal. Sorry for the cappy cell phone pictures. I need a new camera.
Any ideas what's up?

Never seen anything near that bad.
If those are inclusions or voids, that's some screwed up steel.

Hi,
What kind of stone are you using and how much sharpening have you done to the edge?

Maybe that part of the edge has been exposed to lemon juice and its stained
or maybe part of your stone is loaded, so you're getting some filings sticking to the edge and they're rusty
or maybe its duck tape residue or permanent marker :)
or maybe the edge has been overheated in power sharpening so that part is discolored
or maybe the its a "bad" steel and those are actual voids/holes/crumbly stuff

Not sure how you'd check what it is, aside from keep grinding and see what happens :)

420HC isn't prone to rust, but they look a little like pitting from water being left on the edge after use. Too big to be carbide tear outs plus again, 420HC isn't going to have large carbides.

I give up. I'm sure someone with much more experience than me will recognize it.

Thanks guys. I'm stumped too. They are for sure dibits in the metal and the area around it is hazy. I'm not sure who shsrpened it before but judging by the choil they used a belt sander. Is it safe to progress forward? The other side came out perfect but this side is far from it. I contimplated using my BGA to reprofile instead and after seeing this I'm glad I didnt...who knows what would happened.

The area of the blade flat above that section of edge looks to be a little indented. Could just be simple edge damage from use or dropping. I would think it can be sharpened out.

Looks to me what I refer to as "faceting". Flat spots where the steel is ground on a different plane from the surrounding. Cannot imagine what else would cause that. Grind it clean.

Hard to tell from the pictures... but I'm wondering if at some point someone tried to sharpen it with something like a Dremel tool or small grinding wheel (and quickly realized... maybe not a good idea).

I'll try and update some pictures tonight after I get it all flattened put and see if any more problems arise

is it not that the shapening stone has not reached/touched those dark spots? In other words, they may be gone if you continue sharpening with the SAME stone long enough.

Keep sharpening. This is almost definitely an artifact of the original belt sharpening. Mostly it happens when the blade develops a little "bounce" during sharpening due to the belt seam.

Thanks guys i worked it all out with the stone and made the usual progressions and he was very pleased with the results. Sorry in didn't get any pictures of the finished knife. He came and got it to fast
