Does anyone here actually worry much about coyotes in the woods?
When I was out for the Survival Camp Contest, there were a couple of packs of them howling at each other, one of to the "right", one off to the "left" (not sure of compass direction. None in our immediate area, likely because I chased every animal out with all the chopping all day long(didn't even see a squirrel!:D).
There were answering calls from dogs, along with what sounded like one wolf (lone wolves have made it down into Southern Ontario, and small packs have been sited around London from time to time).
So, I threw a couple more logs on the fire and made one more spear with the Junglas. Wasn't needed, but it seemed prudent; plus, fire and spears are fun!
But that was it, and if my friend had been able to stay awake, and my knee wasn't twisted and my injured back further tweaked, I'd still have went the few hundred yards off to do the night-time frog hunt I had originally planned.
So, what do the rest of you think?
Dangerous menace, or majorly hyped?

If you're healthy I don't think Coyotes pose a problem. I wouldn't want to be alone and injured when a pack finds me though.

I don't really worry about them, but I do try to be aware.

We have a lot around here, some Coydogs & Dogotes also.
Many appear crazy as hell, so I don't really trust them. ;)

Absolutely not. That said I CCW every day. I'm far more concerned about 2 legged predators than 4 in Missouri.

I was SUPER, verge of death sick on a trip last year. Ended up laying in the woods up against a tree vomiting to the point of near unconsiousness.

Now, take this next part as you wish, I didn't notice the yotes but I was also really out of it.

A fellow that we were camping with came rushing into the woods with an AR-15 and night vision goggles on screaming "We need to get out of here now!"

He said he was on his way back from hog hunting and noticed me on the night vision and said that the yotes were circling me within about 10 yards.

I believe him for what it's worth.

We also had a few attacks on children shortly before I moved out of Jersey in a local park. It can happen.

when i go camping I hear them too. at fist i though they might come and explore the campsite but they stay away as long as you have a fire going. they seem to be very afraid of humans and want nothing to do with them. as for deer and bear, they always come up into our camp. the deer are nice and won't hurt you but i'm a little afraid of the bears (im 15). i don't camp in a campsite either, just in the woods. campsites can actually be more dangerous and attract more wild animals because of all the food. hope this helps.

wow, crazy story man. i had no clue they would do that.

with me i was camping a a huge blackbear came to explore the campsite. i was on edge. then the bear comes over and starts smelling our tent. all we had was a bowie knife to defend our selfs if the bear did anything. thankfully he was in a good mood and just walked away. good thing we did not have any food in the tent because that bear would have loved to help himself to some of it.

I don't doubt it a bit shotgunner11.... you'd be nothing more than a good meal as far as the Coyotes were concerned. :)

Just another dog in the woods that doesn't like to be pet. Even with bears and wolves up here there is no need to worry, just be cautious. Coyotes are just a pest when you are trying to sleep.

Depends on the yotes in the area and your situation. Personally I'm much more worried about stray/feral dogs than yotes here. If there is an overpopulation of yotes in an area I think they get more aggressive, that's when you would see more human attacks etc. There is strength in numbers, if you're and in some sort of physical trouble as has been mentioned earlier you're probably more at risk. If you're in a large group, even a pack of yotes will usually give you a very wide berth.

Even several years ago out here when there were tons of yotes they were pretty wary of people as they get shot at so much (open season, they're a varmint and can be hunted year round with no limit).

I did an overnight last weekend and had a couple stray dogs walk into camp, some yelling and a Surefire beam in their face and they left, but I was really wishing I had packed my .357 instead of being lazy and leaving it. You can bet next time I camp there I will have a firearm of some sort.

As winter comes watch out, they'll be hungry.

I was at a friends house years ago we had heard from locals some coyotes had been moving into the area and had mixed dogs and wild dogs with them ,we didn`t think much about it. Much later his wife was going to the car to go to work and 5 to 8 coyotes ran between her and the car into an old unused/unsafe barn about 200 feet from the house she was pregnant and came running into the house screaming ,so we get shotguns and go outside walk around the barn and we hear some sounds in the corn(at this time the corn was taller than us) .Well long story short they try ...really try...to lead us away from the house and keep running around us yelping and so we fire a few rounds into the corn in the direction the yelping/laughing was coming from and went back inside. Now he checks aroung for signs and keeps a shotty near the backdoor.I was thinking the whole time "this can`t really be happening" I was scared as we could tell what they wanted and thye had no real fear of us ,we could also tell the ones she saw were not nearly all of them .

Definitely never thought of a coyote as a threat. However I have never encountered more than a single one head on. In that case they usually run away, not sure how a pack might react though.

My main concern is black bears. There have been way to many close calls with my family up in Northern BC with them. Luckily I've never been face to face with a charging one. But seeing a mature black bear 15 feet from your dad suddenly turn and charge, one of the scariest things I've seen. Thank goodness for the ole lever action ;)

I worry more about domesticated packing dogs than I do coyotes

They seem to have become more of a problem in the Denver Metro area this past year. Lotsa sightings along bike paths/hiking trails right in town. Must be the economy. :D

This. Spook a coyote and he's generally running 100 mph in the other direction. Get a group of dogs that have been around people in the past and are used to them that haven't eaten much because they don't have any hunting skills and I might be more concerned.

I had 2 stray pitbull mixes square off with my 7 month old Lab a couple months ago. I went outside to shoo them off and they didn't even flinch. I called the po-po to come get the dogs before I shot them. The responding officer told me the pound was full and basically I was on my own and that it was my right as a property owner to protect the well being of my animals. I said "Good to hear, I'll get my shovel." He didn't LOL. :D

I've had a few encounters on the farm with domesticated packing dogs. I have always come out the winner though.

ive never had an issue with dogs, but once i was attacked by a yote. scared me silly lol. but it ran away cause when it lunged at me a booted it fairly hard in the chest. its flipped over and ran like hell. now im not really afraid of coyotes. to me there more bark then bite
