Anyone after a all VG-10 Fallkniven A1 (not laminated)

I just received a new Fallkniven A1 I bought from Amafiahitman on ebay. I thought it would be the current laminated VG-10 A1 version but when it arrived it was the older non-laminated all VG-10 version. When I rechecked the description on ebay it did simply say VG-10.

I think it was Cliff Stamp here in the forums who recommended the non-laminated Fallknivens as better knives than the new laminated versions, especially in the bigger Fallknivens like the A1. So I am quite pleased with the purchase.

I have also seen a few forumites recently here on BladeForums still looking to buy the all VG-10 version. Amafiahitman appears to be the main seller of Fallkniven's on ebay. I found their communication to be good and their delivery speedy. So if you are still looking for the older version all VG-10 Fallkniven A1's you might get one this way. I'd email them first and ask whether the blade had "LAM VG-10" on it and the box or only "VG-10".

Glenn -

Thanks for the heads up on this. I've been looking for the all VG 10 Fallkniven. I'll check out e-Bay and Amafiahitman. Unfortunately, I just plunked down some dough on an Al Mar SERE Operator with Simonich G10 Gunner Grips. I'm gonna' try for one anyway if I can confirm it's non-laminated. It's great for you that you got the all VG 10 blade. I think that's the only way to go.

I think amafiahitman buys (sometimes) discontinued knives cheaply and resells them. I've bought a couple things from him, his prices are competative, and he seems pretty honest to me, even for a wise guy.

One thing I can vouch for is that these A1's are deadly sharp straight out of the box. It happens to all of us sooner or later - blood everywhere - I'm sure it jumped out of its sheath and attacked my forefinger.

Well, I'd better come clean - that's not exactly what happened. I was wearing it on a belt and decided to give it some air. I think I was trying to make sure the blade did not cut the upper strap on the sheath that normally is used to hold it in secure. I withdrew the A1 and was a wee bit careless. I was successful in protecting the strap. The strap did not get cut!:grumpy:

I still have one S-1 in all VG-10, I've been too busy to list it on ebay but I'm planning on listing it this monday evening.

I don't know if there is any advantage to the all VG-10 over the laminated. Both blades are strong enough to take any kind of abuse any one of us would put them thru.

Walking Man and Glenn - THANKS for the tip and the review of Amafiahitman. It's always nice to have a first hand opinion or two. I just registered at eBay and e-mailed A-man about the knife. If he verifies the all VG 10 blade, then the deal's on.

By the way Glenn, I think you did the right thing in protecting your new sheath.

What a great forum!

I finally listed my S-1 on ebay but feel a little regret in doing so.

If it had a nicer handle like stag or stacked leather with a stainless steel guard & pommel, I'd never think twice about selling it.

I'm still looking for that perfect knife!

I just got my NIB Fallkniven A1 all VG10 blade today. Wow am I happy. I didn't hook up with amafiahitman. But I had a great experience with Bob on ebay who goes under the name theknifeconnection (not affiliated with the store by the same name on line). Bob posted pics, answered both my e mails promptly, and sent the knife along before he'd received my cashiers check.

Thanks again for the heads up on the all VG10 blade, Glenn.

Just out of curiousity, has anyone done a head-to-head comparison of the old and new Fallknivens, or is the theory that the old ones are superior just that, theory? I've never even handled one so I have no opinion, I'd just like to see such a comparison if it's been done.

Both blades should have the same cutting performance.

I think the only difference would be their resistance to bending or breaking but with the Fallkniven's this should not be an issue.

Their fixed blades are very sturdy and will stand up to hard use. The F1and S1 have been approved by the US military, not to mention they are standard Swedish military issue.

They're great knives either laminated or all VG-10.

They are my pick for "best buy" in a production fixed blade.

No offense intended, but 'approved by the US military' is not an automatic positive in my book. I have too much experience with some of the crap they issue to put much stock in it. All contracted out to the lowest bidder then not even properly maintained. Sorry, you just struck a bit of a nerve. I have heard many good reports on the Fallknivens and like the looks of them quite a bit. I was just wondering if there has been documented difference in the performance between the laminated and solid versions.

There were some threads posted by me when I first found out about the switch to a laminated blade. To my knowledge no one has done any head to head tests yet.

Cliff has done one on the all VG10 blade and there were many opinions that were favorable to laminated steel. I wrote to Fallkniven back and forth several times and had a cordial correspondence with them. They basically said that they thought lamination was an improvement. I last wrote that, about 20 years ago, some guy at Coca-Cola thought that changing their formula was a good idea, too. Oops. If it aint' broke, don't fix it.

When all was said and done though, the only solid information that I had was that the "old" all VG10 blade was an outstanding knife - and that it was no longer being produced. That's why I sought out an "old" model.

I agree though RR, it'd be interesting to see a comparison.

I'd love to see a side by side comparison also. I'm the same as Panella. I read the reviews on the all VG-10 blade and all were positive; so I was happy to be the owner of one. But the thought also crossed my mind that I'd love to see a side by side comparison of the two.

Glad to hear you got one Panella - they are a great knife aren't they. The only problem might be with someone with a large hand. They're perfect for my medium sized mitt like mine but there doesn't seem to be much room left over on the grip for a larger hand size.
