I've been thinking about buying this package for a while. $342.00 seems like a good deal for a 1.5 HP Variable Motor Speed Control Package
It's item # 7576027010 on eBay.

I wonder if anyone bought anything from this vendor(Friesen Electronics)

Alex

I haven't bought from them. One thing to realize it is a c face motor without a base and the control is a nema 1, open vents. Not bad if a face mount motor is what you are needing. 1.5 hp VFD will have a lot of power.

I just bought a 2HP KBAC-27D controller (nema 4, closed) and a 2hp Leeson 56H motor (113026), from a company named State Electric in St. Louis for $393.00 + shipping.

You may want to get a quote for the type setup you are looking at from them.

I recall someone stating that dust is very bad on the VFD controllers.

Their website is http://www.state-electric.com. First time I bought from them. They shipped very fast and packaged well.

They just quoted me $326 for controller plus $208 for motor. Total $535.
You said they charged you $393 for both? I wonder why they quoted me muc higher price?

Oop's that should have been $493. Sorry.:o

$303 for the controller and $190 for the motor. I looked at the Dealers Electric package, it was going to be $425 + a little higher shipping to me, than State charged.

So the difference between the two was about $50.

I looked at the fact that the KB and Leeson are completely sealed (nema 4 and TEFC) and I knew the quality was there with both pieces. This, I believe, is the same package that Beaumont Metal Works is offering.

At first, I called and got a higher quote, but then I found the motor number that I wanted, and I asked for an online quote thru their website and it was cheaper.
They matched electric Motor Warehouse' price of 190.

I'm not sure why the controller was cheaper, but verbally they quoted me a higher price than online.

Kelly,

what's the motor arbor diameter and where did you get a pulley for that?

Thanks,
Alex

Alex,

The Leeson motor has a 5/8" shaft. You can see the motor specs here http://www.leeson.com/findaproduct/ Type in 113026, in the catalog number field.

State Electric sells Maska pulleys too. So, I got a Maska MA50 X 5/8 pulley for $11.47 at the same time I ordered the motor and controller. (this is a 5" pulley with 5/8 hole).

This is the same pulley you could buy when ordering the KMG with VS from BMW.

Kelly,

I just ordered a motor/controller set. Hope it'll help me
with my plunge cut. I always wanted slower speed on higher grit belts.
Thank you for your advise.

What did you end up going with? I'm within a day or so of ordering up a VFD setup myself and curious what your research led to.

Glad I could help.

What did you end up going with?

I am thoroughly happy with my setup.

If I can figure out how to do the picture posting, I'll throw a shot of my grinder setup on here.

I bought the 2 hp, variable speed, ac frequency drive motor from http://www.dealerselectric.com/ for $425.00. The shaft is 7/8", it has a base mount and a face mount just like the motor that I took off my Bader 2, bolted right up. No problem wiring it either, I had a friend do it. It's reversible also. I don't think you can beat it.

A couple of years ago when I got my KMG I went with Dealers Electric. If I had it to do all over again, it would be dealers electric again. I love the combination they offer, top quality components. I'm sure the Leeson is good also.

I called Dealers Electric but they don't have totally enclosed controller.
The price difference with totally enclosed controller from State Electric is $80
I went for a enclosed one. It get's very dusty in my garage.

Alex, I think you'll be happy with it. That's the same package that BMW sells. I got mine set up about 3 weeks ago and it is a real horse, no bogging it down.

I'm sure the Dealer Electric package is good.

In fact when I ordered my KMG, my plans were to get the 2 hp package that Dealers Electric offered. I was informed that it is an open system (nema 1), not necessarily a bad thing, but you should mount the controller to avoid the dust. (KB is nema 4, closed)

I have another KB controller on a disk sander and it has been nothing but a quality product. I like their controls, you can use them hard and they hold up well.

Also, I like the fact the Leeson is American made. (The DE motor may be also, I'm not sure either way).

I don't think that either is bad, both have good reviews here.

Well, for what it's worth I just ordered up my variable speed pakage from a local company. I had found a controller I liked (ACTech Model #SM015S). It takes 115V house power in and runs up to a 1.5HP 208 3ph motor. I also like it for the programmability it gives you. You can set 3 or 4 preprogrammed speeds, adjust motor ramp-up time, use a rheostat to adjust, use a computer or PLC to control it, etc. I had found them online for about $300, but my local ACTech distributor quoted me $243. Add another $182 for a new Baldor 1.5HP 56 frame TEFC base-mount motor and I'm off to the races!

Best part is that I can pick it up locally in a few days when the VFD arrives instead of waiting a week or more for ground shipping from WA. I also get the satisfaction of supporting local businesses :D

I'm like a kid just before Christmas!

Scratch that bit..I just doublt-checked. This drive will run on 115V, but it's needs a 35A breaker! I've got the guy at the shop checking into 230V stuff for me...

EXCELLENT!!!! Love my variable speed 3phase motor and controller..... I also have the keypad so I could place the controller out of sight to keep the metal dust from settling in it..... I got mine from Friesen but you can call AC Tech direct and get the controller from them... also the keypad.....

Look at my shop page.... Shipping damaged my motor when it came in 3 yrs ago and friesen replaced it with ease.... They do have a good customer service... KoKo is who I dealt with....
