Anyone care to help me choose a knife?

So I finally joined BladeForums after a bit of browsing through and reading about what everyone has to say.
I would like some help deciding on what knife to buy.
I am torn between the Emerson CQC-11, BM 610 Rukus, BM 710, and BM Mini-Skirmish (I know its a lot of choices).
I know each knife is very different in size and function.. but I am looking in terms of both form and functionality. I don't want to end up with a weak knife that looks good and vice versa.
Hoping for a tough EDC but then something I can show off as well.
Thanks in advance for the help. :D

I hear the BM610 Rukus is a pocket sword.. so I am a bit hesitant to carry something like that unless someone has some good arguments for it.

The Emerson is a great knife, pricey though. The Rukus, another great knife with a reasonable price but it may be too bulky for some. The Mini Skirmish is too small for me, I EDC the full-size. I think that the BM 710 in D2 tool steel is a great all-around choice, not too expensive

have you got already other folders?
Which size of blade do you like?

It has already been told several times, but honestly, best thing is to handle all of them to make your choice, as something nice on picture might not be of your taste in reality (and "vice versa" !).
just go to your nearest knife dealer shop, and try to handle them !

personnaly, i have got BM710, and i like it very much...
CUDDA dominador is nice also (both came easely really sharp).

for my taste, bigger will be too much.

but it's up to you !:)

I am only recently getting into the whole knife collecting circle so the only knife I have that would be of any use mentioning is the BM Dark Star. Randomly picked it up years ago because I wanted a good knife and it looked cool. Immediately loved the Benchmade brand. I really like this size of knife and blade a lot. Good length blade and the handle is not too wide/thick.
I was looking through e-bay and found all of the above knives mentioned for anywhere between $130-180 without shipping so the prices aren't too bad.

I handled the Emerson and Mini-Skirmish today in person and loved both of them.. but would still like to consider the 710 as well as I hear many reccomendations for it.

I think the Rukus is out of the question since it seems a bit too bulky and big.

If the mini-Skirmish is comfortable to use, I don't think you can go wrong with one. I have the large one, it locks up like a vault and hasn't failed me yet. It's a great design, and I prefer framelocks.

I don't think you have to worry about any of those knives being weak, so I would just go with your heart. Buy what you think looks best and speaks to you the most.

I highly recommend trying to hold each of them before you buy, even if that means a long drive.

I gotta agree too...

It's going to come down to personal preference. You can't go wrong with any of your choices.

If it were me I'd narrow it down to the Emerson or the BM710. I do have the 710 but I own a different Emerson model ( the Blackbird). You can get the 710 for less than $120.00 and IMO it's alot of knife for the money.

The Rukus is a beast and could be the last heavy duty knife you ever buy if you arn't into collecting. I myself recently fell in love with the MOD line of CQD knives and compared a Rukus to one. It was a hard choice but the CQD seemed tougher. Both were nice, and will serve for many years of hard use. Check out the MOD stuff. You may end up with one of those. I would look at the AFTK and the CQD MK1 (BIG) and MKII (A little smaller). Best of luck to you.

A another vote for what hair said. I have bought knives that I thought would be excellent and they were but just werent for me. That being said like USAFSP said maybe look at the CQD from MOD, its pretty bad @$$ in its own right, and goes right up there with the knives you mentioned with beafyness. However the Ruckus is by far the largest, and probably the thickest, with the two benchmades being the thinnest and the mini-skirmish being the lightest(I think).

I've got the 710D2 and think its a great knife. You should also take a look at Spyderco knives, the make great folders. Loved Xenogears by the way!

I think after thorough thinking, I've come down to choosing between the BM 710 and BM Mini-Skirmish. I think I'll just end up buying both..
I read a review on the Emerson and the reviewer mentioned the lock is very thin and I don't want the blade coming into my fingers through heavy use (though the Wave design and handle are very appealing).
The designs of both the 710 and Mini-Skirmish really draw me to them and they seem like they would come into good use in their own ways. Plus the locks seem very reliable on both. I haven't held the 710 but judging from the looks of it I would love it.

So http://www.gpknives.com/ seems like the cheapest place around with a big selection of knives. Any other places online that might be selling for cheaper?

**I would like to thank everyone who helped me out with suggestions as this has helped me make (hopefully) a great decision.

And yes, Xenogears is a great game! :D

All of them are fine knives, though I tend to have a preference for Benchmades. They're good enough that it comes down to preference...what feels better, looks better, has an easier lock for you, etc..also, size is going to be a big deal with the 710 and Rukus, maybe the Emerson. The mini skirmish is surprisingly compact! I really like it--I suppose I'd go with that one.

Also consider the Spyderco paramilitary and Kershaw Spec Bump or Blue/Green Bump.

You can't go wrong with GPKNIVES, they consistently have low prices on BM knives. Don't be shy to request a price on an item either, they're typically lower than anyone else.

http://www.savsonswordsandknives.com is another with low prices on BM knives.

Also www.islandtactical.com is another favorite of mine, they're monthly special are very hard to beat and they sometimes have BM knives marked down too. As with GPKNIVES and Savson they're customer service is top notch.

My choice would be the 710D2. It's a classic. I have a 710HS, and its one of my all-time favorite folders. The Axis lock is incredible -- not to mention fun to use, the handle is comfortable in a variety of grips, and it carries very well. The blade geomerty is pretty decent, so it cuts well. I have only one Benchmade in D2, but I have sereral other D2 knives that I use regularly, and my experience with that steel has been uniformly good.

I've handled a Rukus, and it was an impressive. However when I put it in my pocket I decided it wasn't for me -- just too big for comfortable carry.

I don't have a Skirmish, but my son has a full-sized one, and he's let me use it. Another impressive knife. I imagine the smaller one would make a nice EDC. My only complaint about the Skirmishes is that I find them a little difficult to open, compared to a Spyderco, because Benchmade chamfers the opening hole. But then some people, who must have very tender skin, complain that the Spyderco holes are too sharp. Benchmade's opening hole would probably be just right for them.

I've handled Emersons, and they just aren't my thing. But they sure open fast!

The Mini Skirmish is not mini by any means and is probably the most practical of the ones you mentioned. I'd say it is a good choice but the Rukus has made it to my list of knives I want to purchase so its hard to argue the value of a knife like that either. If you are into big knives that one is a good one to consider but in this sheeple populated world of ours it may not be the best one to use in public. It sure looks great though. As far as which is the most appealing to me to carry I'd say get the one with the Wave on it but really the Mini Skirmish is a real good choice for everyday carry. The only thing that bothers me about the mini Skirmish is the tip down carry for the pocket clip. I much prefer the tip up carry mode of the Rukus and the Emerson knife.

Read a lot, take in everyone's suggestions before you make the decision. That is one of the best times when buying a new knife. When you start learning so much and trying to narrow down what specific characteristics you are looking for.
I am partial to titanium frame-locks and not to hung up on the steel. And if you want to show off as well, then sound's like a Camillus Maxx is one to consider. And if you are looking for a something with a nice lock like Benchmade's Axis, SOG has there own version of the lock that I am fond of. I highly recommend the SOG Titanium Vision.

Wow why do there have to be so many great knives out there? Haha. I ordered the Mini-Skirmish and the BM 710 online. Came out to about $240-$250 together and I think it was definitely worth it. I so far got the Mini-Skirmish today and anxiously waiting for the 710 to come in the mail hopefully this week, if not tomorrow. Can't wait to try out the AXIS lock :D
The Mini-Skirmish is a great overall knife so far.

Thanks to JPD1998 for the insight on what stores to purchase from!
I went through GPknives for the 710 because they seemed to have the BMs for cheapest and I didn't want to hasstle calling them long-distance to order the mini-skirmish so i just purchased one for a bit cheaper, brand new, from e-bay.

Good Luck, I don't have a mini skirmish, but I got my first BM ( a 710 ) from GPKNIVES. You'll love the 710 it's built like a tank.
