I was reading the Forum FAQ on steel, and found it a VERY easy read.
http://www.bladeforums.com/features/faqsteel.shtml
It included comparisons of the popular steels, charicteristics, and examples of who uses which steels for what and why. It it the "perfect" layman's Steel FAQ...
Except it is dated 1998. Perhaps someone knowlegable would like to "tweek" it a bit. It was originally done by Joe Talmadge. Joe, perhaps you yourself would like to brush it up?
With my limited knowledge, the onle glaring ommision was the SxxV line of steels. I would be really interested to know their relationship to the 440x steels they were born from.
Along those lines, I personally would be interested in a historical lesson on steels. How did we get from the steel in a medieval claymore or fudal era japanees sword to the steel we use today?
Thanks all for your consideration.
