I have a Case Peanut with pearl scales but I dont want to mess up the scales by carrying EDC. Not sure how "carry friendly" pearl and abalone are.

thanks

Dave

If you are really determined to carry it, you could always get yourself a pocket slip. I cannot comment on the durability of Abalone and Pearl covers, unfortunately.

I carry this old Boker once in a while. I definitely wouldn't want to drop it on the covers.

I have a Silver Knight with pearl covers that was a Father's Day present from someone to their father. It was obviously carried and used by the previous owner and I carry it occasionally. I'll put up some pictures of it. It could be that someone that visits here can tell me about it. The bolster on one side is engraved with the initials "AWE". Anyway, I rarely carry a pearl model or abalone model for fear of dropping it and chipping or breaking the covers. I do love the look of them and wish I could get over my fear.

If I had a knife with pearl or abalone covers, it would be my Sunday knife. I'd carry it, but keep it reserved for lightweight duty.

I carried a Silver Knight in abalone for about 15 years back in my youth before I lost it. Never had a chip or crack all that time.

I now carry a German Bulldog serpentine trapper in MOP just about every Sunday to church.

These small ones get carried to work:

Office job, so the hardest work they get is opening mail and the occasional small cardboard box.

Pearl and abalone are not as fragile as people think. I carry a little custom knife with black pearl every now and then and it holds up just fine.

Dropping things is never good and can have bad consequences on ANY scale material I think. I had a Queen knife where one of the bone scales slpit right in half and one half popped off when it fell on a tile floor.

As long as you try to not drop your knife you should be just fine. Besides....how often do you drop your knife. Probably not very much.

I don't know about dropping mother of pearl, but carrying it has never been a problem. My Henckels doesn't have a single scratch on it.......

I've got a friend who has a little Remington pen knife from the 1930's that was his grandfathers Sunday go-to-meeting knife. He carries it now andthen on a Sunday, and the blades are almost black, but still cut great. The pearl scales are intact. I think a lot of real pearl handles survive the light pen knife duties as long as they don't rattle around with a bunch of keys and change. Smiling-knife has all those old sheffield pearls that look like they were carried and used but are in good shape. They probably lived on a watch chain and were carried in a vest pocket where it was nice and safe. I think the means of carry is more important than the use.

I typically only buy bone or stag. Every time I big on a fancy one it slips by. Nice to know they can be carried.

The German whittler on the left was crack free till I carried it and dropped it :o now I carry it :D

I have an old pocket knife that was obviously carried a lot. The pearl is worn so it's almost like frosted glass. Still looks good though. I've been told by many that pearl holds up good, unless it is dropped. It cracks easier than bone and wood. That's why you find so many old ones cracked. Mine is cracked, with a little chip out of the edge too. but I put epoxy on it years ago and it's been fine. I carry it on occasion. I have another single blade pocket knife, custom by HK Parker that I carry in an empty pocket. It's been fine, bairly visible ffine scratches on the stainless steel bolsters but none on the pearl.

MOP is probably my favorite scale material, and I've been carrying it for decades without problems. I do recognize it's a bit more fragile than other materials, but I'm usually careful with my knives. I carry the knives dangling at the bottom of the pocket without sheath or any other protection, but do not mix them with other hard objects, such as keys. Today, I'm carrying the Case/Bose Norfolk in MOP. After these many years, its MOP remains almost as good as the day it was bought.

I don't like abalone and don't have any knives with it.
