Anyone Carry the Cold Steel Code 4 or Mini Recon? How is it?

Hey everyone!

I'm looking at the Cold Steel Code 4 3.5 inch and the Mini Recon, both with tanto blades. I have ZERO experience with Cold Steel...

Are these knives durable enough for duty and home use?

How is the lock up?

How does the lock wear over time?

How is the Cold Steel warranty?

Any helpful information will be much appreciated! Thank you!

I've got an AUS8A Code 4 in PE spear point, and it's one of my favorites.

Solid lockup with no play. Extremely durable knife. The lock is built to adjust for wear, so you won't have any problems with that. Cold Steel's warranty has vastly improved and does not come with a time limit.

The blade comes super sharp and is a great slicer, and I've never had such a thin-handled knife with such great ergonomics. It's a winner for sure.

I picked up a Code 4 spear point in cts-xhp last Saturday, and have been carrying it all week as my primary. I have to say that I'm impressed, both with how sharp it came nib, and with how well it is keeping it's edge.

Code 4 is othervise a really good knife, but remember the slippery aluminium handle. I really would like to see if someone has modified the handle with thin slabs of G10 or carbon fiber.

I picked up a Code 4 about three weeks ago, and I'm biased in favor of it, because I'm a Demko fanboy.

I have used it on tape, cardboard, plastic bags, and a couple apples, which meant there were a couple trips through soap and water, in between those jobs!

My opinion of the anodizing is that it gives slightly better traction than a wood or polished handle. Perfectly adequate for everyday, even wet from a washing, and I like the subdued finish.

Lockup is excellent! Rock solid, just as you would expect. The blade came with a satin polish, and a very sharp, slightly toothy edge. It zipped through a pile of corrugated cardboard boxes without ever slowing down. The handle is wide enough from spine to choil to give good control, even though the knife is surprisingly thin for it's size.

The end of the pocket clip on mine is bent in, making it very hard to clip the knife on my pocket, but once it's there, it doesn't go anywhere! Say anything you want about Cold Steel, they make some of the most jump-proof pocket clips on the market.

The Triad-lock has a learning curve to it. It is hard to unlock so you can fold the knife back up, but in my opinion, it's worth it for what you get. The lock also holds the blade closed with equal force, so there's no way it's coming open in your pocket.

Besides the pocket clip (mine came with a replacement, and I can probably bend the first one out), my only minor problem is that the lockbar pin is a hair too short, and it rattles back and forth sometimes. It's nothing that will affect the function or the lifespan of the knife, just something I noticed because I'm picky.

I have the Code 4 tanto and like it very much. Solid lock up, sharp, and centered. If I had any criticism it would be the handle isn't the most comfortable. It is very easy to carry though. Nice knife.

I'd like to put up another vote for the Code 4. I took it as my primary knife on a camping trip I led with the Scouts last weekend and it did pretty much everything I asked of it, and even though it's the AUS-8 model, it held up spectacularly. I'm a huge fan. I don't like Lynn Thompson, but I really like CS knives. The best part about the Code 4 is that it's quite the looker:

CS knives are excellent tools IMHO; I think I've bought around 20 and never had a problem. Current carry is the American Lawman in CTS-XHP (powdered D2), holds a terrific edge. The Tri Ad lock is as solid as they come.

CS Code 4 is a great knife - it does not disappoint:

Love my C4's. I bought 3 clip points. I am happy with the Aus8 and probably won't bother to get the Carpenter steel ones. Lock is stiff until you break them in. No issues of clip snag dislodging from carrying it in pocket either. I think it's an awesome knife for the money.

I have 2 mini recons and they are a solid knife , but just personally too small overall for me.

This is thread number 3 from you asking about knives on the front page. You ask these questions, then dont reply back on your own threads. I bet you won't buy any of these knives

That's a pretty tall accusation and a pretty insulting one at that. I apologize that I work crazy hours and can't always get back on to reply right away. I don't see any rules limiting my posts. I don't think it's any of your business which knife I buy, but if you must know, I plan on buying one of each as my pay allows.

Hi Shortime,
I just had my Recon 1 XL Tanto replaced because of the loose rattling pin. CS will replace the folder. Call them do not e-mail them. They'll take care of you.

I have a code 4 clip point the tri-ad lock is solid but hard to open and close at first but you just used to it after a while. My only problem is that the handle is so thin compared to all my other knives and takes some getting used to.
