A year ago I bought a Tsuge Salamander from Seki, Japan. I totally love it.

Anyone else bought a Japanese brand knife? Not just "made in Japan", but from Japanese makers such as Hittori, Hori, I.C. Cut, Tsuge, etc? Please provide feedback.

@crunky

That looks very interesting. I'm also thinking of pulling the trigger on another Tsuge:

But it's single bevel & chisel grind. What a bummer on such a beautiful knife. The sheath also looks sub-par for $350+.

I have got a few Kanetsune and one Seki Cut. Well... They appear not to care much about knives - neither grinds, no the handles are made with particular care. I understand that 70 - 100 dollar knife might be a cheap staff for them, just not worth the time...
But they work all right - I do not have complaints. Either fix them here and there, or just use them as they are - if you do not care about small detail.
Your knife looks very different. It is either very expensive, or made in China. ;) :D

I posted another thread about knock off designs and such. I ordered mine straight from Seki, Japan (cost $250). The MVS-8 steel so far seems like a winner, though not known much in the US (if at all). The hollow grind doesn't split as well as convex grinds, but bites very very deep. Definitely excels as a slasher vs. chopper. My one gripe is the zytel handle. I know zytel is just fine if textured correctly, but I wish it was in Micarta. I guess I could have that done in a custom shop in the future.

I do 90% of my food prep with a 210mm Fujiwara Gyuto. It seriously kicks bum. Made in Seki :D

I have a 100mm Higonokami on the way to my house right now! Did you see that Japanese Folder thread a bit back? I've been meaning to order one of these for a while (as well as a Svord) but just now pulled the trigger...

I don't know if you think this "counts," but I have a really nice Moki Ares lockback. Compared to ANY of the similar, high-quality, American production pocket knives I have, this one's fit & finish is *worlds* better. It's seriously on nearly the same level as my custom slipjoints; its quality blows GEC, Schatt, etc., right out of the water.
Also, I have a Mcusta Take that I carried at my wedding, and although it's a different style of knife (thumb-stud, liner lock, screw construction), it's still a flawlessly made knife.
There are some really great options coming out of Japan these days...

My Delica is make in Seki! :D But my mothers side of the family is Japaneese so im sure somebody has some nice knives! Never really asked though.

I have a number of Japanese Kitchen knives. Most are Aritsugo, Masamoto or Sugimoto. I buy them when I visit friends in Japan, and then ship them home. Much cheaper that way, than buying them here. Here are just a few

I've had my eye on a higonokami, but I wish it was a locking design. I know that the brass handles should be pretty soft, but has anyone tried to cut a frame lock into theirs? I've thought about purchasing one to attempt this or a rehandle. I love the blade shape and the steel sounds decent.

I have a mcusta tacitility in quincewood and have to say it is top notch (I also have two browning icestorm made by mcusta that are really nice) Actually just received a a Moki serapis today and I would say it exceeds my expectations but I have heard nothing but great things so I figured it would be top notch. I am going to have to buy another to carry I think because it is too handsome of a knife not to have one for my collection and for carry.

I have a toyokuni hunting fixed blade...very very sharp right out the holder. Which is my one gripe, its a wooden and copper hand made sheath, not very useful for hunting. But the knife is beauty, and the convex grind is perfect.
