I was just wondering if their is any collector interest in the original pst by leatherman or the first gerber multi-tool?I have both that were purchased in the first year of production, and was wondering if anyone else was collecting these or other models.Does anyone know a good source for information on the suttle changes in both models over the years?

Hi Matt,
I've got one of the original Gerber Multi-Pliers, with the bright polished finish. It is marked "First Production Run."

Here is the "First Production Run" tool on the right, next to the more common early Multi-Plier on the left. On the "First" tool, I note the polished finish, the crude scissors, nail nicks in the blades that don't line up with cut-outs in the handles, and some type of (bearing?) device at the plier pivot. I see quite a few improvements were made in the Gerber tools that followed.

I do not have one of the original Leatherman PST tools. I understand one difference in these early offerings from Leatherman was the absence of a lanyard attachment. Also I'm told that the hard-wire cutting notch was not in the early models.

Hi Guys,

According to Leatherman, the hard-wire notch was not added to the PST until July of 1995.

Hope this helps - Joe

thanks for the info and pictures.I have caught the multi-tool bug. I bought a gerber tool at walmart after christmas clearance cheap. It has locking blades and seems to be fairly good quality.anyone know the story on these?they are too cheap to be regular production, nice tools though. What do you guys think of the kershaw tools, they look interesting, especially the automatic opener.

Hi Matt ,

I definitely collect old multi tools . The original Leatherman did not have a lanyard attachment point . This was thier first modifacation was to add one , that little tab that angles off from one of the rivets . Thier earlier models also did not have the screw type rivets but were a hard rivet . The hard wire notch came later .

Which model of Kershaw are you refering too ? The only automatic or Switch type tools thaT I am familar with is the Sog switch plier and the Gerber automatic .

the sog model was the one I was thinking about.thats wath happens when you scan too many sites looking at tools.sorry for the mix up.So what do you guys think of sog tools.

I beg your pardon. The sog tool was the one I was talking about.I got a little confused. So what about sog tools? There seems to be a lot of models to choose from from a wide variety of manufactures.I need to specialize my collecting so I don't get lost trying to collect everything.I wish one ofthe manufactures would sponcer a collector club, kind of like case or buck.

I've got all of the SOG plier tools, and I like all of them MORE than I like the SwitchPlier. Sure, it pops open automatically, but that seems like more of a gimmick than anything useful. The rest of the SOG tools, with their gear-driven plier mechanism, are pretty neat. All are top quality. For some reason though, they don't seem to have much of a following? Probably due more to lack of distribution than lack of quality and features, almost everyone has heard of Leatherman and Gerber multitools, but not many people own SOG's.

I have a SOG PowerLock, and IMHO it is much better than any of the others.
Why? Because you can disassemble it yourself, and order/replace additional tools, I can flip open the pliers with one hand, and the compound leverage makes the pliers very grippy.

I do not know why the SOGs are not more popular.. I think it's all in the adverstising... LM and Gerber seem to advertise more and are easily found in big-box (Wal-mart) type stores...
