Anyone Competing or Performing?

I'd like to know if anyone is throwing competitively or is performing for audiences. If so, what are you doing? How'd you get started, and how much do you practice? I just started throwing on a regular basis, and I have to admit that I'm hooked. I'm trying out different knives, and so far I'm in love with anything Hibben has put out there. I have a set of 8" knives, and my set of his large knives just arrived yesterday, and I'm going to be throwing them today.

I started throwing against the bottom of a whiskey barrel cut in half, but I just made an 80" x 30" target board with several bullseyes painted on it. I like the close up throwing that I'm doing for practice, but I'd love to eventually get into longer throws. That's what the larger, heavier Hibbens are for...hopefully.

Anyway, I'm just curious to see what others are doing with this hobby. I could see myself either going to competitions or doing a local event if I keep it up, and I'd like some advice on both if anyone has experience.

For sure I'm competing! In the tenth year already. Mostly knives, but since hawks run also in our tournaments, I do them, too.

As for competitions, have a look here:
- Europe (that's my site): http://www.knifethrowing.info/thrower-meetings.html
- USA: http://www.throwzini.com/events.html

Hopfeully that's some throwing events in your region!

Thanks for the info. Have you done any "shows" for local groups or at fairs and carnivals? I'm trying to put an "act" together, and I'd love to get some ideas.

Sorry, I'm strictly a hobby-thrower, competing for points. Not doing any shows (and certainly not with human targets).

I can't quite convince my wife to be my target! :D I taped her outline on my target board, and showed her how accurate I am. First throw was right between the eyes!!! There went that idea!

Nah...I'm not throwing at humans but did think a manican (sp?) or a big teddy bear would be fun. Or a cartoon figure painted on the board. I don't know...just trying to put something together for mostly kids for charity purposes.

Well I'm currently on hiatus from touring and doing shows at the moment. (bills first) But some other people out there are on tour right now. You might want to really talk to Throwzini, Jack Dagger, John Shaw, Tyler Fyre or the lovely GoGo Amy from the Pretty Things Peepshow.

JohnnyMayhem...God, I love that name! Thank you. I suppose I will just email them. I'm not trying to compete with anyone...just some fun things with the local Autism Society, Boy Scouts, community stuff, etc. I appreciate the heads up!

Nothing wrong with competing. I'm thinking that if you look around in certain parts of NC, epically if you hit the ren fairs, I'm sure that you can find somebody that has an act or at least a knife throwing booth.

I see you're from Greensboro. I come from the eastern part of the state. There aren't any Ren fairs around here that I'm aware of, but fair and carnival season is upon us, so maybe I'll have some luck with a sideshow? I've been in the Maryland/D.C. area for a long, long time, so I'm not sure what's really happening in these woods yet. We'd have carnivals up in Maryland every Summer, and sometimes they'd have a few sideshow acts...those were good times and a relic from a great past in sideshow history.

I thought that there is a big ren fair near Charlotte. I remember hitting one outside of Raleigh a while ago as well. There are always touring sideshows going on everywhere.

Here's a small primer on old sideshow acts from sideshowworld.com http://www.sideshowworld.com/44-KTDA/KTDA.html Also there is a tattoo convention coming up in I think Asheville where there is a sideshow performing as well.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at the site. Hmm...sideshow acts are interesting. I didn't realize they were so commonplace still.

`It has been making a resurgence since the early 90s or so thanks to the Jim Rose Circus. As well as the variety entertainment and burlesque shows as well.
