Anyone Disassembled a CRKT Ripple?

I was at NGK the other day and fiddled with a Ripple a little. Mike didn't have any for sale, but, was kind enough to get one from the back for me to look at... as I turned it over in my hands I looked at the pivot and noticed that it didn't look like my IKBS Voorhies. In the Voorhies there are bearings all the way around the pivot, but, in the CRKT it didn't look like they went completely around.. Where the Ripple is really thin it was hard to see back into the pivot area, so, I could be wrong.

I would like to put out a pic request for some internal shots of the IKBS on the Ripple. I know some of you tinkerers out there couldn't resist taking one apart. ;):D Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have not taken mine apart but when I look at it with a flashlight I can see bearings all the way around the pivot. I think you may have mistaken the internal stop pin as being part of the IKBS.

You are probably right..... didn't have my light on me that day :o

Thanks much for the reply

So there is only one race on the blade and one is in the other scale. I wondered how they didn't make the blade too thin. The race on the blade almost looks copper, is it something that has been bonded to the blade steel?

It looks like it would be smooth until some sand or something got into that sticky grease.

It is SOOOO smooth!!! Smoothest opening knife I have ever felt by a wide margin. So little pressure is required and it whips open.

But yeah, I do worry about getting grit in the pivot and fouling things up.

Still, quite an impressive knife! IMHO.

UpChuck, you are the MAN..... Thanks a million and those pics are great.:D

Email me your address. I want to send you a little token of appraciation.

Very nice pics UpChUk. Looks like a very clever design to keep the knife so thin. Was it hard to take apart and put back together? Did each race have the same number of ball bearings? Did it come with any info on the type of grease to use?

As far as dirt and grit, I don't think that this would be a knife you'd used very often in dirty environments. Pocket lint and fuzz gumming up the works might be more of a problem.;)

Can't wait to try one out for myself.

Thanks!

I'll be taking more pictures tonight in my lightbox. These were just quick grabs.

As far as ease of disassembly, it was as easy as a regular folder. Just gotta be carful that you don't knock the bearings loose. But the thick grease holds it in fairly well.

The lock bar seems pretty strong. It takes quite a bit of force to push to the side. I had a sticking issue with the lockbar against the tang but used my DMT Alighner's diamond whetstone (fine and untra-fine) to smooth the contact points. It doesn't "stick" any more but still needs strong thumb pressure to move. I would say it takes as much pressure to move as my Kershaw Lahar which needs good thumb strength and calluses. ;)

I am EDC'ing it for a while to see how it works in that role. I'll be watching out for junk getting in the pivot and fouling the smoothness.

Thanks UpChuck! Looking forward to reading your review after you've carried it for a while.

How deep is that groove cut into the blade?
These were said to be pretty thin knives so I'm wonder how thick the blade is at that point.

The grooves are about half the diameter of the bearing and those are quite small. The blade itself isn't that thin. It is thin but nothing too bad. It is maybe ~2mm. I'd have to check it on my calipers though. But what makes the knife as a whole so thin are the handles. It's like having a knife with just liners and no G-10 scales.

Thanks for the pics, I definitely wanted to see what the IKBS looked like.

I think the Ripple is too much of a gentlemen's folder for me though, but I really hope more knives come out with IKBS.

In terms of particles getting trapped inside, I remember seeing various tests on the IKBS with sand and whatnot showing it candle handle tough conditions.

Update - Here's the 'IKBS torture test' video with sand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ptNsbpBnig

There are some other ones in the series as well.

And actually I just realized since this knife is tip-down only clip carry, the pocket lint and junk in the pocket should not get into the pivot.

Very cool pics!

Now I have an idea how my Galyean JYD and Lahar look inside:D

I'll be keeping my eyes out for a Ripple, the first CRKT I'll be picking up since buying the Crawford designed, American made Voodoo and Wild Weasel a few years back with 154CM blades. As far as I can tell they were some of the last great knives to leave the CRKT factory. This one could very well be the next:thumbup:
