I am working on the first knife that I have done for a LONG time, and it will end up being a gift. It is larger than what I am used to doing, but so far it is turning out pretty nice. As far as heat treating it, though, I think I am underpowered for what it will take. The knife is a traditional sort of tanto cut from 1" wide, 1/8" thick 1084 stock. The blade is probably between 5 and 6 inches long overall. Convex ground with a file. Edge os sharp already, and I already ground in a bit of a curve that I suppose normally happens from the hot blade hitting the water. I am used to doing a differential HT with oil quench on 1084 but I just don't have the ability to heat a blade this size (not that it's that big, but I'm used to the 3" blade scale!). Also, the blade has a false edge running about 4/5 of its length. Since it's roughly Japanese in style, I might like to have it clay treated for a nice hamon, if it isn't too late. Anyone who does this (and has experience!), please email me with a price estimate. Thanks!

Normark, I have been doing my best to get my practice up and running. It's been a year and things are getting to the point that they're paying for themselves. Working 12+ hours per day (not all doctors keep cushy hours!) doesn't leave much time for much else. I haven't been buying knives, making them or doing up any sheaths. Work, work and more work! Also, I just got my workbench cleaned up, and spent last weekend hanging pegboard and actually getting some crap off the table. I started this latest project yesterday and it's pretty much done except for HT and everything following it. Felt good to make something. The last knife I made was probably 6-8 months ago and I made a really stupid handle, so I sort of dropped it for a while. When I get through with this project I will probably need a leather sheath. Any recommendations?
