Anyone drill a hole in their Becker?

I would like to modify my BK-9 (maybe my BK-2 as well) with a special lanyard hole at the top of the blade by the front of the handles. I liked the way this guy ties his lanyards, and think it would make for a very safe handling option while chopping and bushwacking in the woods. Take a look at the way he does it:

So I would like to drill a hole through this thick bar of 1095. How hard will that be? Anyone try doing this with their Becker? Do you think a standard metal drill bit will be able to handle it, or would I need something stronger?

Design wise, that would be the safest place to put a lanyard on a large blade or machete. Well actually about where the third bolt hole is, the one closest to the blade.

I posted before I watched the video, but yep, thats what I was thinking.

Some Tips, Drill press, Carbide bits and have a couple cause they're brittle and keep it slow and cool, water helps.

I just had an idea. If you removed the handles and placed them in a vise you could drill one hole directly in between the scales. This would allow you to tie a lanyard through the cutout before you reinstalled the scales and the lanyard would pass through the newly drilled holes.

I'm pretty sure drilling a hole in the blade would weaken the knife and void your warranty. But I think slapper's idea is great, since the tangs on all bigger BKs are skeletonized anyways. Give it a try, get creative, and don't forget to bring a camera anlong and feed us with pictures!

Take care

Thanks, everyone. I'm not worried about voiding the warranty. Also, I am not sure I would want a lanyard hole that just went through the micarta handles I have. It may wear the hole away eventually and destroy the handles.

I guess I need to get a carbide bit and find someone with a drill press. Also, they usually use oil to keep the bit from overheating.

If you drilled the hole in the scales parallel to the blade...on the front side of the scales, more of a notch than a hole really, you could use the existing skeleton holse in the tang.

you could probably make matching "liners" that install under the scales, and are extended to allow you to have more of a "guard", and put the hole through THAT (with a spacer).

as well, there are probably ways to figure out how to get a piece of small paracord loop under the scales on both sides around the forward screw, and give you JSUT enough of a place to slip a lanyard through - as with what slapper said now that i review, but you might not even have to drill to try it out

I'd say go with gutted paracord like bladite said. I tried this and the gap isn't too big, I can hardly feel it.

Drilling the blade will be a pita.

If you like it that way... make a notch in the scales wouldent be hard, right!?

No, a little bit of file work, or you could drill like I mentioned earlier. I do not desire a lanyard here, But the OP does, so if he is willing to try these he has a couple of options. But like you said, this is definately the easy way.

Been doing some chopping with this and it works. Try it before you drill anything.

If you go to a machine shop they likely have a shear or metal punch that can make that hole in seconds without any heat issue.

Arkanian, yes it's a cordlock and a piece of 550 that I keep in the pouch. When I'm chopping, I slip it on. It works for me.
