What a nice knife. I've been EDC'ing a Mantis for a few weeks now and liking it very much. I just recently got a Pilot which is the Mantis' big brother. What a value this is - A Mayo design, backed by Buck and manufactured in China to keep costs down. I'm thrilled and quite frankly amazed at the quality of both knives for the price. The Pilot came out of the box very sharp while the edge on the Mantis could have used a touch up. But none the less, these are sturdy frame lock knives that work great for the light use duties of a desk jockey like me. ;)

Hi MikeZ,

I received my Pilot last week and am very pleased with it.
Sharp as a devil!
I was wondering about the Mantis, but thought it would be too small.

Like the framelock and the 440C steel.
I wonder if the edge retention is clearly better than the 420HC steel on my 110 and 112.

On the whole, Excellent knife!

Well...I must admit that I was at a sporting goods store and saw the Mantis and Pilot. I liked the looks and thought about it.

Thanks to your feedback and since I have to run down to the hardware store to get a small screw for my sheath I may stop by there again and pick one up during my lunch break.

I was hesitant as it is in a blister pack and I couldn't check it out.

Even though it's chinese, through another thread, my fellow Buckaholics have steered me to get over the import gig and trust Buck's quality no matter what.

I will let ya know what I end up picking up...as I am looking also at a Tempest for the assisted opening.

Regards,
Me.

Ok, the store didn't have any Pilot Bucks. So, I got a Mantis (198 off shore laying down "T"). Impressive for the price point.
Only thing I don't like so far is the sharpness of the end of the pocket clip...can poke a hole in my pants when I'm drunk and putting it back in after picking popcorn kernels outta my few teeth.
It's a keeper thanks to the original post of this thread.
Cheerios and Trix...
