Anyone else carry a folder like this?

I am a huge fan of neck knives because around the house and in my shop I like to wear athletic shorts, the kind without pockets.

Occasionally I like to have a folder with me instead, usually for a larger blade if the job calls for it, or just because ;)

The pictures probably speak for themselves as to how it's rigged.

I've found it to be very handy when I'd rather carry a folder, and it's really no different than a neck knife.

Anyone else ever try this?

I carried a Gerber LST that way for a while, until I noticed that I never used it over the folder in my pocket.

I carried a Delica like that when I was TDY in Saudi Arabia. It has been a few years, and now I carry a Mouse in a kydex neck sheath.

You ever catch it on something, take a tumble or get in an auto wreck and you will find out real quick how its not at all like a neck knife in a kydex sheath. They make excellent kydex sheaths for folder to hang on your neck. A. it keeps it from opening if it catches on something quite so easy. B. its quicker and less cumbersome to get too as you dont need to lift the cord loop over your head. I think the way you demonstrate is an accident waiting to happen. But hey some guys get lucky and other dont. I am very negative about it. :(

I don't see myself ever carrying a knife in that manner. Seems somewhat dangerous and very inconvenient. I virtually never wear pants without pockets, so I don't really need an additional place to hang a knife.

cpirtle, I could be wrong, but that appears to be an Axis AFCK without that BT2 coating on the blade. I thought they only came coated. How did you get one like that?

get a neck rig, put ball chain covered by the outercore of 550...

lot safer. lot more convenient.

The way you have it, the only way the cord is coming off is over your head. Choking hazard anyone? ballchain breaks at about 25-30lbs. hard yank and it's off...

Knife11, thanks for your intelligent response.

I think you guys need to re-read the original post. I use this occasionally when I'm hanging out around the house, not when I'm out in public.

I have made at least 50 kydex neck sheaths for other people's folders and don't like them for several reasons, but that's just personal preference.

I also much prefer straight para-cord to a bead chain for any neck rig for comfort purposes, since I don't carry a knife for SD. That argument has been gone over to death and there's no clear winner. I have made at least 75-100 neck sheaths for fixed blades and played around with both methods extensively, aside from breaking away I see no advantage to a bead chain.

It's actually quite convenient, and although a tip up knife is shown in the picture a tip down knife is going to be much more safe, since I keep my pivots tight it won't open by accident.

But I do have a hard time arguing with the safety aspect of it, were I to fall down the steps there's not telling what would happen.

Fishbulb, it's actually a TSEK, just came today :)

I bought it because I like my AFCK's so much.

I carry an OTF that way but it is in a sheath. It has already been mentioned but I will say it again. For me it would defeat the purpose having to take it off orund the neck. I would suggest getting a kydex sheath made for that so when you need it fast it is ready.

Since you said you only use it around the house, I'm pretty impressed. I don't understand why you'd have to "take it off around the neck." Obviously you don't need to take the whole necklace off to get to the knife, and I'm not sure how else you WOULD take a necklace off.

Good call. I might end up using this sometime.

Yep, I guess I should have clarified that the knife just clips onto the loop which is around the neck. It's not tied on like a lanyard. I just unclip the knife from the loop and it's ready to go.

Armsraised, I'm just not a fan of Kydex neck rigs for folders.

I've made plenty enough for other people just too much of a hassle. I like this because it's quick and works for any folder I have, that way I don't have to make a sheath for all of my folders ;)

Like I said before, I really prefer a traditional fixed neck knife, this is just a nice change of pace.

Sorry I didn't read everything first and I just took a closer look at the smaller picture and saw how it is under the pocket clip, "Hey that's a great idea!"

I have carried both clip knives and SAKs in a similar manner. For the SAKs I added a clip to the split ring so I could attach it to the cord. It's a simple solution when you're out of pocket space.

Chad, I think it's a stellar idea. I did something similar a while back, but your version is definitely more refined. To simply clip or unclip the knife to the loop is really a good idea [running to my supply of para-cord to fashion my own], I'm going to give it a try.

I often wear “athletic” shorts without pockets around the house. In those instances, I just clip the folder IWB (inside the waist band) rather than a pocket and have never had a problem. I carry a Cuda Maxx that way and it doesn’t pull my shorts off. The only caveat is that the metal handle can be a little cold in the morning for a few minutes until it warms up.

cpirtle-- interesting idea, but it does raise some safety concerns, even for around-the-house wear. I would be more likely to try it with a slipjoint than an axis or liner lock.

The only concern I have is catching it on something(such as machinery) and having to get it off in a hurry... it's only coming off by going up and over.

when wearing pants without pockets, just carry IWB.
