Anyone else hate G10?

Personally I cant stand the stuff. I just feels cheap to me. I hate seeing a nice knife, well made, great action, top of the line steel and... G10? I just seems wrong to me. how about some nice anodized aluminum, carbon fiber or, god forbid, wood?

I wouldn’t go as far as hating it but I share your dislike for the material. Seems cheap to me but it works for some knives.

I hate working it does that count?

While I can understand some of its practicalities, it does feel cheap to me too. Guess I'm just a natural material handle kid of guy.

wow, you might have just changed my mind about G10 with that knife. that thing is cool! I feel you about working with it though. Im a machinist and cutting fiberglass is the worst, chews your tools to bits, puts out awful, poisonous dust, and leaves uncut glass strands everywhere making your part "furry" :P

I wouldn’t/don’t kick a knife out of my pocket because of G10. Good vireos of colors to choose from in both folders and fixed blades. It’s strong, durable and can take a reasonable fall/drop without damage. Doesn’t absorb foreign materials, which is good when using with foods/game animals. So, no I don’t hate G10.

I'm with you. I'm not a fan of anything plastic on knives. I know there's nothing functionally wrong with it. Just a personal preference. I'm titanium all the way.

ya i love Ti too. But I dont understand the aversion to aluminum

Like the majority of this thread, it's mostly mental. There are aluminum bolsters on the Benchmade Crooked River (one of my favorite knives), and I can live with that, though you can tell by the weight and feel that they aren't the Ti I feel they wish it was. There are aluminum liners on the Cold Steel AD10 (one of my favorite knives) and i don't like the look of them - I feel steel would have been worth the extra weight and would be a strength increase (and keep it closer to the original AD10).

It's all preference. I'll never break the aluminum AD10, and it'll never truly matter that the bolsters on the Crooked River aren't Ti. But I just feel like aluminum is always the cheaper alternative to the material a maker would have preferred to use.

Not a huge G10 fan but I gotta say, Ghost Jade is my favorite color on any knife......its the only G10 I will take over ANYTHING!

Micarta on the other hand I hate.....unless its on a fixed blade.

One reason for G10 dislike. 90% of the time it’s in flat slabs. If you see a nicely contoured pair of G10 scales on a PM2 it totally transforms the knife!
That was going to be my comment as well. I like G10, but bored of flat, thin, slab of it on every knife(except the dpx hest by lionsteel). There's some nice G10 handled knives out there though. I like when Benchmade smooths their G10 and adds a pattern to it(like the grip or mini ruckus). And contouring it is nice too.

Or check out DOAT and Keyman's postings of their custom scales. Might change your mind quick.

I don't mind G10 when it's accompanied by steel liners. My main experience with it is through Spyderco, and it can be quite rough at first but when it smooths out or if it's already smooth like on the Tenacious I think it's nice in the hand.

I prefer micarta (if you can't tell) but I like G10 just fine. For a custom hunting knife I prefer stag or a nicely figured wood but I have a few with micarta. I only have a few fixed blades with G10.

I really like G10 and micarta. Wood can be good.

What I can't stand is slick metal scales on both sides of an otherwise fine knife! I rarely consider such knives anymore. For heaven's sake, put something that has some grip on one side, at least. Titanium, aluminum and steel, I'm looking at you.

On the other hand, G10 and micarta on one side and framelock on the other - no problemo!
