Anyone else have trouble with the wire clip?

My only Spydie with a wire clip is my Slysz Bowie. After carrying it for a while the retention got super light. It would wiggle side-to-side pretty easily, and it even fell out of my pocket a couple times when I was bent over/kneeling/squatting down.

I took it off and gently bent it, then re-installed and it was back to normal! Maybe even better than before.

However, now it's starting to loosen up again. Any advice?

Thanks!

Is the screw backing out as well as the pocket clip losing retention? Just curious by what you meant by side to side movement .

I've never had any problems with my spydies with the wire clip. How long is it holding before it loosens up?

Hey, yeah I probably could have been clearer. It's not an issue of the screw backing out, it's more that the clip is just kind of...losing it's shape. Like it will bend out easily and bend side to side easily. It just kind of loses it's rigidity.

Those are heat treated to my understanding. Maybe yours is not right. I love the wire clip and have never had an issue with any of them. Probably 12+ with different size wire clips.

Maybe try replacing the clip? I wear these thick pants for work but they are coated in this fire proof material and they are real slick. I haft to increase retention on most of my clips or they will fall put of my pocket at work.

My caly 3.5 has not lost retention in over 3 years. Maybe the clip has just weakened ?

The screw on my DF2 wire clip loosens up occasionally but the clip itself has never bent or anything like that, maybe they'd send you a new one if you asked?

The Slysz clips are around $7 if I remember correctly. I bought a couple for reasons like you have stated. Once you've bent the clip back into position a few times, it loses its spring. I like how easily the clip slides over pockets, but I am always a little paranoid about the Slysz coming lose.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone! I've always heard such great things about them so I figured that something was just a little screwy with mine. I'll give them a call [emoji1417]

i'm not a big fan of these clips! and have them on my sage's,i think they could have come up with a better idea!:grumpy:

Mine have all held tight. When I first saw the wire clips, I really did not like the looks. Just looked cheap. Then I tried one, and suddenly my pockets stopped getting shred marks, they were smoother to holster, very smooth draw, and do not leave creases in my car leather seating if wearing in back pocket. Now I absolutely love them.

Maybe you got a bad one. Or maybe it got pulled or tweaked too much during movement throughout the workday. Call Spyderco and order a new one. You can always keep the current as a backup.

I have had issues with the clips bending if I'm wearing very form fitting jeans and when I sit there is not much wiggle room in the pocket... I can't explain it beyond that but it's happened enough that I understand what causes it... something about the knife following the bend in the pocket while the clip stays stationary.../shrug .....it puts just enough bend in the clip that you could easily slide a nickel under it by placing it on the flat of the handle scale and tilting the whole knife towards the top......all pocket retention is gone gone gone...

dunno boss, I know that's no help, but at least there is some comfort in knowing its not happening to just you...

Yeah, there's definitely comfort in knowing that it isn't just me!

I gotta say, though, that I love everything else about the clip design!

I've never had a wire clip lose tension, but I have had minor issues with them lacking enough opposing traction on slick titanium, which may be your case, also?

But, to be fair, I've had similar issues on smooth ti frame locks with Lynch clips as well.

I'd recommend putting some wire shrink tube over the wire clip and shrinking it on there. The added rubbery surface will give you some needed friction (and color too I'd you want, haha ;) ) and hold it in place.

My wire clip on my Sage 1 is still tight as ever.

I think Speedholes might be on to something. Perhaps the reason your clip keeps losing it's spring is because at some point your clip got tweaked in just the right (or in this case, the wrong) way to cause it loose it's rigidity and springiness. It's kind of like, once it's deformed it never will be right again.

I see this happen to my pens a lot. The clip gets bent, I bend it back, it's ridgid and springy for a few days, then it's loose again.

The only way to combat that is, probably, replacement.

Yeah, look into plastic deformation vs. elastic deformation.

Right. The metal got stretched or twisted. It's like when bending pipe. You've stretched the metal to make the curve, but once the curve is there you can't remove it. You have to start over with a new piece of pipe.

Of course, I'm not metallurgist or physicist, It's just a guess.
