Years ago unless you spent hundreds ,the quality of a knife was just ...well...ok. In the past year i bought two rather inexpensive knives and they had nice fit and finish. One was a kershaw chive, and the other was a s&w for 25.00. Both were nice and the one thing i notice most of all is that years ago ,a tell tale sign of an inexpensive knife was the grind or cut marks, like when a piece of steel is cut on a band saw. neither of these knives had that. Has anyone else noticed a jump in quality latley ?

I was going to post something similiar, so I'll just jump in here.

Over the holidays I picked up a set of 3 "Remington" folders at WalMart. One large Buck 110 knockoff, a large 2-blade trapper, and a small stockman. All with wood handles and brass bolsters. "stainless steel" blades. They are of course made in China. I got to tell you, for the price I paid (<$20), they are a great deal. The fit & finish is excellent, the steel is very sharp and seems to be at least a AUS6 or 440A quality, fine for me the way I use knives. The walk & talk on the slipjoints is pretty good, and the lockback locks strong & solid.

I compared the lockback to an old Pakistani knockoff from about 25 years ago, and the comparison is night and day. The Remington is not a Buck 110, but it is much closer in weight and all aspects of quality than the Pakistani could ever hope to be.

The quality on "cheap imports" has come a looong way.

Hi all,

Just so we are all clear, our Chive is made in the U.S.

I must agree that several of the knives made in China are of fairly high quailty, and are very cheap. You would be amazed at the wholesale prices !! Pakistan has not caught up.
I recently found a dealer in NY that has a large selection of the Westbury Sales knives from the 1970's that were made in Japan, and other than the Mirroe polished blades, the new China ones are quite better, and cheaper to buy today then the Jap's where then......But the older Japan models do hold alot of memories so I picked up a buncn....

Hey Thomas,

That's why I keep buying Kershaw products :D I own just about every different version of the Leek and my wife owns every different version of the chive. Keep 'em coming

-Sun Runner-

p.s. I think they added the chive to this list by mistake, my apologies for the above poster.

They are great!!!!

Sorry if I hijacked this thread, I just didn't want anyone to mistake the Chive as an import.

Sun Runner, We do appreciate you and your wife's support with the Leek's and Chive's. Thank you.

tom19176, the 2410 has been discontinued, the 2415 and 2420 will both be in our 2006 line-up. BTW, 20 is a good number, glad you like em.
